  1. I know that Restoration may not be the ideal sub-forum, but most of my video work is on old VHS tapes .. and you guys have been amazing with you help.

Just had to do a full rebuild on my PC .... to avoid 'clutter' what is the best codec pack to install ?

I use Avisynth/VirtualDub & Sony Movie Studio, and currently all are now with defaults.

I think previously I used K-Lite codec pack and DVX Pro codec, and I'm sure others sneaked in over time.

Google for the codecs you need for your work. The best "codac pack" would be ffdshow: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/. You will need Lagarith, of course. You will need the VirtualDub 4cc plugins: http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler/
Seek codecs as you need them

    The general rule is this:

    Do not install K-lite.
    Do not install K-lite.
    Do not install K-lite.
    Do not install K-lite.
    Do not install K-lite.

    etcetera etcetera etcetera

  3. Think I got that then

I knew there was a dislike of K-Lite so glad I checked.

Just went to the Lagarith link you gave .... across top of page is a big green 'Download' button .... it does not say what it is for ... but when you download it is not Lagarith, it is 'Ultimate codec pack'

No wonder people end up with wrong things (not your fault I know) .. have now downloaded from Developers site.

If you didn't save anything of your previous OS setup, you'll likely run into some utils or codecs you don't have yet. You have to get them one by one, as they're called for. All of the downloads for video work on my PC's are kept in a separate partition or external drive if I have to reinstall the OS. If they are kept on the same partition with your OS, you're stuck with getting them all over again if you reinstall.

Yes, that Lagarith link is auto-inserted by the forum software. That type of auto link usually takes you to the page in the forum's "Tools" section.
