  1. I want to use both checkmate() and a derainbower.

I use them before the deinterlacing line in the script.
Which should be called first, the dot crawl remover checkmate() or the derainbower bifrost()?

Does it even matter when it comes to those 2 which is called first?

You can use either of them before the other. The hard and fast rule about using these filters beforr or after deinterlace/IVTC is old wives' talk. Try it before. If that doesn't work, try it after. Personally I'd undo interlacing before using either. The results also vary depending on how you deinterlace.

  3. CheckMate() should almost always be used before deinterlacing. The algorithms used depend on the fact that dot crawl artifacts have specific spacial and temporal properties. If you deinterlace/IVTC before using it those properties are not retained and the filter will be less effective. Here's are crops from a video with severe dot crawl artifacts (no comb filter at all in the capture), after QTGMC().CheckMate(), and after CheckMate.QTGMC():

Thanks for the demo. I'll have to take your word on this with the few videos I've used Checkmate on. It seems I got better results with a couple of them using Checkmate after going progressive -- but those two vids were exactly alike in character, made with the same capture card (not mine), and might have been atypical multi-generation sources. I generally use another routine for other occasional vids (one of your old masking/resizing routines), which won't work on interlaced. But I'll give checkmate another audition later according to your recommendation. Thanks for checking me on that (uh, pun not intended!).

I hate dot crawl. No matter what you use, cleaning it nearly destroys everything.

  5. Yeah I know checkmate is always before deinterlacing.

I didnt know if the derainbower should be used before or after checkmate though since I havent used bifrost before until now.

Really? I havent had any problems with checkmate(tthr2=0) destroying my sources. If I dont use the tthr2 then yeah it hurts alot of the quick moving scenes and makes dots appear on it.

Just use it before you deinterlace if you have to deinterlace and add that tthr2 parameter in there. You wont see noticeable damage that I have ever noticed, and I use it alot.

I've use it both ways. It depends on the source IMO. Likely jagabo is more correct on this, and I haven't depended on checkmate very often. I keep looking for other means, which usually involved a resize/masking routine of some kind. It's a headache that way, not as simple as just writing a single line with Checkmate in the script, and I'm still experimenting with them. And still looking for better routines.
