  1. Evening, guys. I'm trying to convert a VOB file to Avi using XviD4PSP and I wish to maintain (almost) the same image quality as the input file, just to watch it in the PC/TV with good quality but not with a file so big as the VOB. But I don't know which is the best Avi format and video encoding to do so.
I also have a problem regarding the Resolution/Aspect of the conversion. My VOB file is 720x480 (16:9) but when I try to convert it to Avi, it changes to 720x408... And when I try to change the resolution to its original size manually, the output aspect change automatically (from 1.7778 16:9 to 1.5000). Also, if I change the output aspect to the same as input, the output resolution size changes back to 720x408. That's really annoying, I'd like to know if it's possible to avoid it.
    Thank you in advance.

Avoid what? Avoid getting an AVI in the correct aspect ratio?

What's wrong with 720x408? Do you want larger, like 848x480? You can adjust the resolution to be larger. Do you want 720x480 but have it play in the correct aspect ratio? You can set a SAR for it.

Or open the VOB in AutoGK and let it make the hard decisions.

  3. Avoid changing the aspect ratio if I keep the original resolution size (720x480). Can you explain what a SAR is and how I can set it?

dvd mpeg has non-square pixels. to convert to square pixel format avi you need to change the size. either 854x480 or 720x408 is fine and keeps everything looking right.

Under Video->Resolution/Aspect of XviD4PSP, set 'Aspect Adjusting Method' to SAR and 'Output Aspect' to 1.7778 (16:9)' The SAR tells the player how the video is to be resized at playback time, just as the DAR of a DVD tells how it's to be resized (either 16:9 or 4:3). Not all players will respect that SAR, though, and resize it properly.

Me, I usually resize it as aedipuss suggests since I use XviD4PSP to make MP4s for upload to YouTube.
