  1. is it possible to upsize (720p to 1080p) a video using handbrake? I've played around with settings but I can't make it work unless it's not possible?

Is there any other app I can use? thanks

Not 100% on this ... I'm not sure why you'd want to upsample 720p to 1080p anyway, it certainly won't improve the quality ... usually people downsample ... but you may need to select a different profile.

Sure, you can increase the resolution but...

You can not add what is not there!

You can reconvert a standard dvd to 1080p resolution, but it's not going to make it any better!!

Best to let your hardware do the upconverting/upscaling or just watch it as.

  5. let me worry about "what's not in there" and let's stick to the topic at hand?

I've been doing this stuff since 2000 (dvd ripping) and the question is more of an "for my information" that anything else. I might have a need for it

  6. All the simple programs will do no better than the player or TV can do in realtime during playback. If you want better upscaling you'll need more sophisticated algorithms like nnedi3_rpow2 in AviSynth, or maybe a program like Infognition's Video Enhancer (don't believe their hype).

I was sticking to the topic, but you can't argue with stupid......

  9. Don't forget: you will lose quality by reencoding (assuming a lossy codec) and the upscaled video will require more bitrate.

  10. one reason for SW upscale could be mixing SD footage with HD footage, where one would use lossless intermediate

^ This is one of a few different reasons. The original question was "Is it possible?" not "Why should I not..." ooops, nevermind, the touchy guy is banned anyway, lol
It is possible, even Handbrake can do it(I'm not suggesting using that though) The best suggestion has already been made (AVISynth) but there are a few NLEditors that can do it fairly well too.
