  1. Is there any way to tell what program a file was ripped with?

    Maybe. Yes and no.

    I'm assuming that, like most beginners, you are confusing encoding with ripping, and I'm talking about encoders here.

    If you open the file with mediainfo it will generally tell you what encoder and parameters were used, as long as the program didn't block that info.

    The trouble is, most programs you get that do this, even the ones that aren't free, are just a GUI interface front end for free, open source encoders. And that's the program that mediainfo will identify, not the GUI you think is the program.

    By ripping I mean ripping the dvd to the hard disk

    Nope. If you just rip the dvd or blu-ray folder/iso to your hdd.

    What are you ripping then? I rip the dvd video_ts folder to the hard drive when I rip. Or maybe to an iso file.

    Or are you converting to some other format?

    Yes ripping a dvd , sorry was confused. It is the video_TS

    is this ripping what you call encoding here?

    That what i thought not sure why Hoser Rob said I was confusing encoding with ripping,


    Also i ripped it with DVD Decrypter and in Media Info there is no reference to DVD Decrypter

    I doubt any ripper adds anything to the video_ts folder/files so you can tell what program you ripped with.
