I am busy with the massive task of converting all my VHS tapes.

I played the cassettes on a Super VHS machine, a JVC with TBC/DNR; captured with Virtualdub using the Lagarith lossless codec. The size is 720x576; the video bit rate is 50-60Mbps; 25 fps; PAL; and the color space is YUV. I then cut them in clips, using Virtualdub. I am now cleaning the clips with AviSynth, using different filters.

I am now at the stage where I want to encode to Mpeg2/DVD to compare the clips on my TV, therefore I need to drastically shrink the size of the clips and obviously try to get the best quality.

A number of encoders have been mentioned on the forum and in the sticky e.g. SUPER, Handbrake, etc. TMPGEnc Mastering Works 5 is also highly recommended.

Once I am happy with the clips, I want to merge them with a NLE (still in AVI) and then add titles,do the final editing and then encode the video to Mpeg2. I will save the original lossless AVI.

What are the suggestions for a good encoder to encode the AVI to Mpeg2 and what should the settings be? I believe that for DVD the target bitrates of 6000 to 6500 VBR

A last question: What NLE is recommended? I like one with a storyboard view, but Pinnacle does not support Lagarith.

  2. Rule out both Super (it sucks) and Handbrake (not MPEG-2). I think most around here would recommend HCEnc and CCE, with a scattering of votes for others including TMPGEnc.

I know nothing (and care less) about NLEs as I have no need for any. Someone else can make suggestions there.

    Thanks for your comment.

What do you use for editing?

  4. I use HcEnc via HcGui when I need MPEG 2. It needs AVS scripts as input.
