When I right click on a link and choose open in new window, nothing happens. If I right click on a link and choose open in new tab, it works.

If I press shift and right click and choose open in new window, it works.

Problem started a month ago and it happens with IE8 and Firefox.using XP Pro SP2. Have no system restore points.

    Any suggestions?

That's apparently a problem with IE8. Try this:

To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
1.Quit all programs that are running.
2.Click Start, and then click Run.
    3.Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
4.When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):

    •Shdocvw.dll
    •Actxprxy.dll
    •Oleaut32.dll
    •Mshtml.dll
    •Browseui.dll
    •Shell32.dll

You can also try this page for a bit more info: (I would probably try reading this first. Seems a common problem.)

    Thanks redwudz

I regestered all the .dll and all installed ok except Mshtml.dll. Tried regestering Mshtml on a working computer and got the same results. I believe it's a self regestering dll.

The weird thing is that the problem happens with Firefox and IE8.

Run browsers in safe mode with add-on's disabled ... you may not realize you have add-on's installed which could be the cause to the problem.

Firefox > help > restart with add-on's disabled

Win 7 for IE = start button > all programs > accessories > system tools > internet explorer (no add-on's)

    2:

Create a new user profile, log off and back via the new account, if resolved then an issue is in the affected user account profile ... backup that users data and delete the account ... reboot and recreate that users account and return data.
