as some of you may have noticed Pegasus released a new version of their video master works apps but for some reason when i try to install the trial it says that the install msi resides on a network and asks for the location of said network; ergo i can't install the trial version since it seems to be lacking the msi file.

i'm wondering if it's a problem with their installer or if there's something wrong with my pc.

The trial version isn't an .msi. The latest trial version is named TVMW5_Trial_5.4.1.102_setup_en.exe (102MB). But out of curiosity I looked at 5 versions of their software on a backup drive, and none of them are .msi's. They're all exe's.

yeah, i realize that but for some reason i get an error message that says the msi is located on a network drive and asks me to point to that folder in order to continue with the install. everything else i have installs and uninstalls just fine so i was wondering if maybe their exe was corrupt or of something is screwed up with my system.

Actually, an installer.EXE can be just a wrapper for an MSI package.

And the whole Microsoft Installer thing is a nightmare in itself

True, that .exe can contain any number of different files when it's decompressed. With a scant few exceptions, I've owned and installed everything made by TMPGEnc since 2002, and I've always downloaded trial versions before buying. I never had the problem described. It's possible that the installer is looking for some Microsoft Windows component that isn't installed on the O.P.' s PC. I once had that problem concerning a .NET Framework version that I carelessly overlooked before running the installer, but the warning message appeared as soon as install began and it identified the problem precisely. I installed the required .Net and the app did what it was supposed to do.

Why hasn't the The O.P. sought free installation support from TMPGenc? I contacted them on one previous occasion and received an almost immediate reply. I'm certain TMPGenc knows more about the software's installer than we do.

That's a serious possibility. Just as an example, an improperly-configured MSI package can screw the Registry and/or make msiexec and its associated DLLs completely unusable This happened to me a couple of years ago, when I was stupid enough to give a try to the "latest and greatest" Adobe Acrobat --- in the end, I had to 1) stop the Windows Installer service , 2) UN-register the respective DLLs 3) use a Bart PE emergency disc for replacing the Windows Installer files with its "outdated" versions 4) RE-register the goddamn DLLs, and finally 5) re-enable the Windows Installer service (set it to "Manual", no need to leave it turned on all the time).
