I get the black screen missing codec for AVC 1. The video has an mp4 extension, listed as AVC1 format in media info. Quicktime vdplugin is in Plugins32 same as my other machine where everything opens fine (but that machine has shark007 Windows Pack installed).

Need help, please. I seem to go through this exact same VDub problem often over the years. I would like to avoid installing the shark pack on the machine with the AVC1 problem. Is there something in ffdshow VFW Config I'm missing?

  2. VirtuaDub source plugins do not include codecs, only file readers/splitters. You will still need a 32 bit decoder for the codec used in the file. Try installing ffdshow. It includes both VFW and DirectShow decoders for AVC1. Which is used will depend on what MP4 plugin you installed.

    In Plugins32, I have:

    DShowInputDriver
    FLV
    Matroska
    MPEG2
    Quicktime
    WMV

Is there another one you suggest?

  4. Both Dshow and Quicktime can open MP4 files. Try using the "Files of type" pulldown to specify which one to use when you open the file.

O...M....G. OK, went ahead and bit the bullet and installed Media Player Codec Pack even though I didn't want to install a pack collection. Video now opens but pressing Play in Virtual Dub brings up "No audio decompressor..." In Media Info, like the video, it's AVC.

    What to do?

  7. What is the audio? Probably AC3 or AAC? You probably need an ACM audio decoder. Or just ignore the audio in VirtualDub. It will probably pass it through correctly.

Says AVC for audio. I installed AAC /AC3 anyway. Didn't help. The dub goes through, as you say. but I still would like to know what's up with this. For example, why would it say AVC for audio in KMP's Media Info?

  9. There's no such thing as AVC audio. Use MediaInfo to tell you what the audio format is. You probably (depending on which source filter you are using) need ACM decoders, AC3ACM or AACACM, not Directshow decoders. But if you're using the DirectShow source filter you need Directshow decoders rather than ACM.

VirtualDub natively uses VFW and ACM -- old video and audio systems for Windows. Most newer programs use DirectShow, the newer audio/video system for Windows. But if you use the DirectShow source filter VirtualDub asks DirectShow to do all the decoding for it.
