  1. Up until last week when downloading a youtube video with keepvid it always offered the flv as 240p, 360p, and usually 480p as well (as well as the other filetypes).

Now for flv it's only offering me 240p.

Does anyone know if it's youtube that no longer offers 360p/480p flv or is it keepvid that's stopped functioning correctly?

The highest resolution a clip on YouTube will have is the actual resolution it was uploaded in. YouTube can only offer lower; if the *.flv file you downloaded tops at 240p, whoever put it on YouTube likely uploaded only a 240p clip.

plus, if you want to test it out, just upload a 480p video. then see what keepvid offers.

  4. What I meant was that when I use keepvid there are no 360p or 480p on youtube at all. You won't find them on ANY video, even those that you know previously had them.

What I don't know yet is if youtube really have deleted ALL the 360p & 480p flv's or if they still exist but keepvid has stopped offering them.

I guess YouTube has just invented a way to hide the "higher-quality" versions from not only keepvid, but also from savefromD0Tnet and similar services

I have just confirmed the issue through one of the clips on my YT channel --- the settings button of the player (still-?) shows the 480p option, however there is no 480p option available according to savefrom-d0t-net.

EDIT: Now I've checked a 1080p clip from an acquaintance of mine, and @ savefrom.net both the 480p and the 1080p versions are unavailable.

youtube sucks. the videos are horrible quality, and they still dump commercials, even on worthless videos. its just out of control. too many inexperienced users trying all sorts of things and don't know what they are doing, and causing more traffic and greaf for viewers.

  7. Just tested a 480p of mine. I can easily play the 480p version but the highest quality version available for download is 360p. Time for the downloader apps to figure it out once again.

I opened up YouTube on Firefox, used an add-on called YouTube audio and video downloader 0.3.0 on some wretched video on vevo, and all download links *.mp4, *.flv, *webm, in a variety of resolutions up to 1080p were presented and downloadable. I suppose you just try all the downloading add-on apps and see which makes your cut.

  10. I just tried a link that didn't work earlier and Keepvid fixed it, it's offering the other flv's again! (EDIT: And 360p/480p flv not available from keepvid again. That didn't last long!)

Oh and vhelp you mentioned commercials. I've never had any commercials on youtube, you can block them in your hosts file.

i don't know anything about a host file. that is news to me.

  12. You need to find your hosts file. It's a text file called hosts with no file extension. Different operating systems have it in different locations. For example with XP it's located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc but I don't know what O/S you have you you may need help finding it.

When you find it, open it in notepad and if there's already some text in there, add this onto the end...

Why not just use Adblock Plus in Firefox. I haven't seen and Ad. in Youtube for as long as I can remember.

oh, that host file. i know about that file. but i think we are getting confused about the commercials. i'm refering to the ones that are in the actual video at youtube, and after a certain number of seconds, they finally give you the option to stop the commercial and watch the video. those commercials. i'm finding in yt links more often than i care to see. some of them make you wait until it finishes before finally showing you the video, as in the example linked below.

this is what i see in my browser.. and if you play through the whole video, you will see pop-ups for demi lavato lyrics. just noticed it was there during the video playback. this is just yt's next best way to fudge you in your attempts to copy their videos. not, just like pop-ups during television, these things run across the screen. so, screen copying is no longer the ultimate method of a clean copy, not if this junk is in them.

  16. I installed the hosts file text that Bandersnatch gave us (thanks a lot, man!) and didn't get that advertisement before the video. That ad for the Demi Lovato lyrics is an annotation that can be turned off in the 'Settings' for the video.

    Geez what an awful video.

I've NEVER seen those commercials on my pc, so yes I'm talking about those as well as all the other types of youtube ads, the hosts file should block all of them.

I was quite surprised the first time I saw them on my brothers pc as until that point I had no idea youtube was doing them. He also had little sem-transparent ads sometimes appearing over the bottom part of the video. I never get those either.

  18. Getting back to the topic of the thread:

I've also noticed that 360p & 480p FLV's are gone. As recently as Oct 10, I'd downloaded "12 Zatoichi And The Chess Expert.flv" (360p, 325mb) from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V901yb-CMu8 using DownloadHelper v4.9.21 (Firefox addon). When I check that link today, 360p FLV is no longer available.

Following turk690's tip above, I tried YVAD (Youtube Video and Audio Downloader) - except I'm using the dev/beta build, v0.3.1b6. There's a discussion on the same issue at the YVAD bug tracker (https://github.com/inbasic/iaextractor/issues/84), where it's been mentioned that Youtube is now splitting audio/video streams for certain resolutions. I've found that so far, only YVAD parses the video/audio-only links (see example below.) One question I have regards the many AAC 256k links I'm running across, which strikes me as dubious given some of the sources (i.e. how many are just up-converted 128k tracks?)

If you get a chance, please check the Youtube link above to see what options are available to you. For comparison, this is what I see as of today:

    DownloadHelper v4.9.21:

    CYS (Complete YouTube Saver) v4.4.4:

These are the qualities YouTube is currently offering for that video:

Internet Download Manager finds and lists them all:

  20. Wow, I didn't know Youtube had all those Zatoichi films in their entirety!

I'm getting weird results with FireFox and Download Helper. If I click on your link the movie starts playing but DH shows nothing. If I navigate away from the page to another youtube video sometimes the Zatoichi links show up. Sometimes just the FLV links, sometimes all the links (webm, mp4, flv, 3gp). I'm using a 64 bit nightly build of FF. Maybe it has something to do with that.

Kibase.com's youtube downloader showed most of them but not the frame sizes.

  21. Changes are definitely happening. Some of the changes are probably keepvid and the other sites failing to pick stuff up, as well as youtube messing with things as well.

After my initial post on 13th Oct, I noticed that on 14th Oct the missing flv formats were back on keepvid, then gone again on 17th Oct.

Yesterday I noticed keepvid offering a link for mp4 480p (video only). When I downloaded it to see what it was it was indeed video only although it was a larger picture size than the standard 480p

Yesterday keepvid wasn't offering a link to a 720p mp4 I wanted, so I used savefrom net to get it with no problems.

i suspect they are being reencoded, or are testing such out.

if youtube is posting three available videos, for instance, and then some other site is posting more than youtube is stating, then i would suspect the 3rd party is recencoding to add the extra size and/or formats.

The Complete Video Saver addon for Firefox now supports these 480p and 1080p streams by using ffmpeg to mux the separated video and audio tracks.

Any others that have been updated?
