Edit - I changed it to unlisted - I realized when I signed out making it private you can't play just the link alone. So hopefully you can play clicking the link now. If you still can't play it let me know and I'll just make it public.

There you have it. It's only 2.5 minutes and I didn't take the time to edit out the reaching out to the camera (no remote).

Fyi it's on older model kodak zi8 playsport model. And I did record in 1080p but for some reason youtube capped it at 360p - is it because I'm on my old single core xp desktop and it somehow knows I can't play hd video smoothly?

Anyhow the first part is my memorized part of where the streets have no name with the delay turned on. (no amp by the way just computer speakers about two feet from the camera - hope the sound comes through ok).

Then I do the part of summer of 69 I can do - just the rythym and part of the main riff.

I guess I was self conscious of the camera and wasn't going with it as well as I can.

Fyi here's the media info for the original file. If you think it might be better quality than the youtube posting please suggest an upload file sharing service and I can upload the original file - a 150mb quicktime movie file (well really h264 but the readout starts as quicktime but it is avc so hence h264:

As I said I might have been overly aware of the camera and not as smooth as I've been getting on the parts I can play. Also I wasn't following any sheet music (tabs that is).

So there you have it. Please feel free to comment and yes I know I didn't frame it right this was a quick dash to get it done so I didn't forget about it and chicken out.

    Thanks everyone

Edit - If you have trouble playing it since I marked it private please let me know. I'll make it public so it can be accessed if you can't play it.

Edit 2- ah now that I click on the link above 1080p is an option for playback, the 360p must have been a quick preview after uploading. This is my first upload to youtube so I don't know all the quirks.

Edit 3 - now I just disabled comments and voting, saw it was in the advanced settings tab

Congratulations on learning the guitar and being brave enough to make this demo!

How's your timing? Are you fluid enough to play along with the record and keep up with it?
If not, it will come soon.

What other songs/styles have you tried?

    Thanks

It's easier having it be here at a place I've been a part of for so long its not as nerve wrecking

I'm a bit faster than the video when I'm following the tabs and don't a have a camera running. I'll slowly get faster I'm sure.

Just Streets and 69 so far.

I've just started to do a few licks of U2's BAD. That's the song that really got me going into the guitar again. Watching some covers on U2 really made me want to go for it.

    Thanks everyone.

Later this year as I get more fluid I'll try to post again.

Cool. Now you have a record of where you are at this point to refer back to in a month and see how much progress you've made.

I would suggest that you try to learn alternate picking before any more songs. It will be tough at first because it will be slower and you'll have to think about it more than straight downpicking, but it probably won't take more than a week to get comfortable with it and be able to play at 2x your downpick speed, at least on a single string.

@vaperon800 - yep haven't gotten into up and down strokes yet just downstrokes.

Though I'll be working more on just Streets and try to focus on all settle details I can to try to put it all together.

Like I said I am a little bit faster and a little more polished than the video. I guess its the little red light that does it to you.

But I'm obviously still a beginner, no doubts there.

cool. the electric is much easier on the fingers. going the acoustic is the way to go if you want to build calluses quickly in order to play better on the electric. at least thats been my method when i step away from the guitar for a while and loose the calluses, which is a lot these days. too many things going on.

    anyway, great start

    Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

I'm hell-bent on nailing summer of 69. I'll be getting all the proper finger placement and timing down for the song.

I will eventually get into the proper strumming sequences too.

But first of all I just want to play it all the way through first. Then I'll work on speeding up and proper strumming.

I will post a video again someday. I promise (you can take that as a threat if you like )

As promised another video - sorry db83 no dancers:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6aw77CIKuM

(edit - this is just summer of 69 this time, part of it of course and under 2min)

I don't know how to do this embedding stuff but it's below:

    [iframe] width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/T6aw77CIKuM?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>[/iframe]

Critique my appearance all you want I didn't really dress for the occasion. I also recorded in a different room and needed the backdrop to cover up the appearance.

I didn't play the bridge which I just started working on the other night.

Barre chords are pretty tough for me right now. that's what I'm trying to work on so I can complete the song.

Then I will be able to play the song in order.

    Comments welcome.

I tried to frame it right this time. Though I think I should have tilted the camera up a bit more on the micro tripod I was using.
Fyi the speaker was right next to the camera this time so it should be much crisper sounding.

The camera does have a mic in jack but there was a buzz and it wasn't crisp at all when I plugged into it.

    Thanks everyone.

    Here's another session:

    http://youtu.be/Zkrl3Lfa73c

I started working on the ending solo with the string bending.

    Edit - it's only 2 min fyi

I am nearly there. I just need crisper chord changing and I'm not hitting them cleanly in the video. I think I'm still too aware of the camera and I'm not going at my pace hitting the chords right.

But I'd say I'm making pretty good progress.

    --------------------------------------------

Also I did buy a guitar amp - it has "overdrive" so I sort of have distortion which is what I was using in the clip.

    [img]125_0363.jpg[/img[

Unfortunately the video camera doesn't have a flash so it's a so-so pic. But it sounds good. And only 30.00 used at guitar center it was a good deal. I think it's a 20 watt amp - it's got 20 in the name and 20 on the power supply but doesn't say watt next to it.

It's a "craze" brand if I remember right. edit - sorry crate, just looked at the picture again

I don't know the song that well, but it sounds like you're going for the wrong frets with some fingers at 0:46 and when it repeats.

It's been a long time since I tried to record my guitar playing, but the camera always messed with my head too.

I think that's the pre chorus. I don't have it memorized yet that's why I was looking do at the sheet next to me.

Also I don't have the Bm chord nailed yet. It's a barre chord and I don't have the high e string pressed down firmly enough.

It's weird isn't it? Even if you're not staring at the little red light you know its there. I think next time I might tape over the light while i'm recording

    Thanks for commenting.

Here's the chord I was referring to.

    It looks like you're doing:
    e|-0-
    B|-2-
    G|-3-
    D|-3-
    A|-x-
    E|-x-

I guess you meant to play one fret down, Am?
    e|-0-
    B|-1-
    G|-2-
    D|-2-
    A|-0-
    E|-x-

Either way, two fingers on the D string won't help!

EDIT: Oh never mind, that's your Bm played a fret too low and with your index unused instead of barring the B.

I just played it again (the video that is). I think thats the Bm barre chord I'm trying to hit.

Like I said it's still a work in progress.

I did see you can do an alternative without hitting the a string and just do the chord without barring but hitting only the high e - but that is probably not a good habit to get into.

Edit - and it looks like I actually needed to be one string higher on my pointer finger.

This is actually kind of cool for analyzing my own playing instead of just watching others. I really should do this more often.

Yeah, figured that out after you posted. Didn't refresh the page though apparently.

What are you using to learn the song? I actually prefer this punk cover, myself:

@vaporeon800 - I'll try to be polite and say I prefer the original as I stopped playing the clip you posted at the 8 second mark, no offense I hope.

I'm using the guitar tab I bought from musicnotes.com. Plus a few different summer of 69 lessons on youtube.

    My main source:

    <iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/1VXR7DdlzBw?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Ok how do you embedd youtube? I just right clicked and copied "embed" and pasted it here.

    Otherwise it's here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VXR7DdlzBw

And like I've said a few others as well.
