One thing I'm using with the USB cable is an extension. Could that be a problem?

I couldn't even use the usb cable that came with the 1512. I had to re-use the one that came with the 1212. I can certainly see that as a real issue.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
I ordered a longer one, yesterday, on eBay. Oh man, here goes the game. Grrr!!!

I found a better gauge gold tipped hi-speed 2.0 usb in my wire collection box. I've been using that lately . It's shorter but my devices are close to each so distance is not an issue. Guess you can't move your boxes closer to test.
btw) I was wondering if the cable / extension combo has worked at all with other capture apps like Showbiz, the Hauppauge Capture program or a graphedit graph. If any of those work then I wouldn't suspect the usb cable as the problem. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
yea, i was thinking the same. he should'ov started with one of the other apps, they usually start off with the correct defaults to get you going. wintv is unique. a secondary capture utility. if he doesn't want to spend a lot of time installing those *other* suites, he might give the graphstudio (gs) a short. but then he needs to be sure he has the necessary drivers and dodecs installed first. then fire up gs. but i will leave that one for you, gll99.

So I take it that you've never actually had video with the 1512 with any program?
Also in one comment you mentionned the 1212 so I wonder if you have that unit too. As I said I had trouble with the 1512 usb cable and even exchanged the whole unit but had trouble with the second one too. I really believe they got a bad batch of usb cables because the one I got with the 1212 and a couple of my own hi-speed usb cables had no issues with the 1512. If you had it I'd say try the one from the 1212 but you've introduced another variable by using an extension cable so that complicates things a bit more.
Are you sure you can't move the computer closer to the 1512 so you can remove the extension cable. Maybe you have to keep the 1512 close to your stb but what about another device like a PS3 or an Xbox? They are more mobile so could you try that to help solve the problem. It may turn out that it is a bad usb cable but it's hard to test if you can't remove the extension from the equation 1st.There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
I will have to try the USB, once I get it. Or I will try moving the PC. I don't have the 1212. Just the 1512.

Since this is a new install and you have never had a playback video we are starting from scratch. Obviously if no program works then the problem is not with WinTV7 alone. The issue could be anywhere along the chain so it's a process of elimination. Starting in one place could be the solution but maybe its the last thing you try. It could be at the source such as a bad component cable, crossed cables or not properly pushed in, the stb signal itself , the usb cable, a bad installation of the drivers or even a faulty 1512.
If you had another component input source such as an xbox360 or a DVD player with component out you could eliminate the likelihood of the source and component cable as the problem. I would never try an extension usb until I knew I had a good signal and could see the effect so eliminate it completely no matter what test you run and only try it when you know everything works. Then you might narrow it to the usb cable but if all fails then I would completely re-install using the latest update (HauppaugeCapture_1_0_31183_full) from the Hauppauge site and then as a second step download and run ("HauppaugeCapture_1_0_31248) to upgrade the Hauppauge Capture app also to the latest version. At the very least this will bring your drivers and programs right up to date.
btw) When I first bought mine I had experience with the 1212 and a similar Avermedia usb pvr but still had problems at first because of the usb cable which was totally unexpected so it was hard to pin down until I switched it as a desperate measure as the last thing through the process of elimination and then I had a second issue installing the software that controls the button on top of the 1512. I didn't know the cause until someone here at VH helped me realize it was because of a partial install which turned out to be caused by my firewall / virus checker. Needing and sharing some type of help is fairly common for various reasons with this device. It's fantastic once you get it going. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
Thank you guys for the help, I'm going to get back at it tomorrow.

The answer is NOT in scanning for channels because you don't have any, that is done by other hardware.
IIRC, and I had a different Hauppage unit, I had to go thru scanning for channels and then set the input later. In fact, I'm pretty sure that, when using WinTV, I had to use VirtualDub to set the input connector and then go back to WinTV to record.
WinTV was very, very funky and I really did not care for it at all. -
Could I ask one question which seems to have been overlooked.
If I read the connections for these units correctly, your signal goes from your actual tuner, in your case the DVR, to the hauppuage and then back by hdmi to your tv and to the PC by USB. If that is so, do you get a picture on your tv with these cables connected ? -
It doesn't really work quite that way but it is a good question. The component output from the stb (dvr) (could be hdmi or composite but not in his case) goes to the 1512 component input (could be hdmi or composite but not in his case) but then the signal takes 2 paths.
1- The signal goes out to the tv via a bypass but not quite directly it needs power and the unit has to turn it on. There is a dongle to switch the connector from component to hdmi output which then goes to the tv.
2- The video signal gets compressed and then is sent to the computer via usb where the software displays the compressed signal on the computer monitor.
Your question is valid though because if there was no video getting to the tv then it might indicate a problem at the input. Possibly a component cable or a signal issue from the stb such as a possible copyright block. Now I said might because there is unfortunately a secondary problem the 1512 has to lock in the signal before the bypass turns on. The thing doesn't really work if it doesn't lock in the driver. There has to be a handshake between the driver on the computer and the unit itself. So it's not strictly a hard wired bypass. From what I can tell the unit has to switch on the bypass once it connects to the driver on the computer. After that you can actually unplug the usb from the computer and the bypass will actually stay active / locked until you unplug / replug the power from the 1512.
To the OP:
The 1512 does provide a bit of help though. DB83's question actually reminded me that I forgot to ask about the lights on the 1512. The light on the unit blinks when it can't make the handshake, turns yellow to one side, light blue on one side when it locks the signal and goes full blue when recording. I'd have to pull my small document sheet from the box to remember the exact light activity / colour codes but what does the light look like on yours at various times.Last edited by gll99; 7th Oct 2013 at 11:23.

DB83 I do get a signal to the TV. I will get back in a few.

So what is the alternative to WinTV? I want to record from my DVR.
It Started In Texas -
Well you say you've tried WinTV7 (not Wintv), Showbiz and Hauppauge Capture with no joy. I've never tried it myself but there is a 3rd party app. It's not free but you can use it to do a 2 minute test capture. http://www.capture4me.com/index.html
Beyond that as was suggested you could try building and running a graph using graphstudio or a bit more manually using graphedit. Don't bother trying programs like Virtualdub etc... they do not work with this device driver. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
I have not ignored the reply. I was in bed
From a process of elimination, accepting gll99's scenario of the need for handshaking of the driver to get a picture on the tv, the fault, if indeed there is one is between the unit and the PC. But also accepting the scenario, the usb connection also appears fine.
I'll first ask the dumb question, just to remove any misunderstandings. With the PC turned off, does the tv still get a picture ?
I do not think you answered gll99's questions about the lights.
Also, did you explicitly follow gll99's instructions on the Channels tab where you set the video source ? That is not the screen you showed since that is only to pre-select the sources. Certainly, it is now established that the 'No tuner' is a red-herring. With the source set correctly, with the tv showing a picture, there is no other logical reason for not getting a picture on your PC screen. -
Some more questions now i am 'awake'
1. In the OP you said 'DirecTV DVR'. You can record on this ? Why bother with the huappuage ?
2. Are you sure the DVR is not sending out hdcp even over component and just pass-though over hdmi ? -
I appreciate the replies, I am working longer hours, this week. DB83, I haven't turned off the PC and tried that, yet. Will have to try to work on this tonight.
gl99, the light is blue, It was green at one point. It is a steady light. The 1512 is getting the signal, I say this because when the output of the 1512 is connected to my TV (via HDMI) I can see it.
I'll get back to you guys on the Channel Tab question. It Started In Texas -
you are suffering from the same problem as mine.. no preview. search for a topic on 'hauppauge hdpvr...' by me. anyway, that is why i ended up coding my own capture app for the hdpvr though w/out preview. i am currently upgrading it to include a list pane to show current (indexed) captures. see post #19 for that example. i don't know if it will work for the hdpvr 2, i can't test it since i don't have one, but it probably will. but it will require you to have a .grf (graph) file already tested and working first.
anyway. i suggest that you get out graphstudio and create a graph and get that working. be aware, (that if your symtom is the same as mine) you will have no preview during capturing. thats not a bad thing though we still would like to see something. anyway. get a graph working and post that here. i'll take a look at it and and it for debugging. i would like to release this app for others to use who just want to quickly capture things, ie, video.001.ts, video.002.ts, ... and so on. the app will allow you to make filename changes while capturing so that you can make meaningful filenames to identify. i don't have a screenshot of that update just yet. still working on it at home.
but please don't waist your time trying to get a preview in that graph. just make the graph to only record to a .ts file. i had a screenshot of it but can't find it. later, when i get home, i will post that if you want.
oh, here is the test for you to realize that 'no preview' issue. the next time you work on it, and see the blue light, chances are that it is (capturing) recording to an .mpg file. search for the default folder that your app or suite is pointed to and look. otherwise, it could be recording the files as .mp4 or m2ts format. if you are not sure of where to look, then the next time you test your unit and see the blue light come on, imediately load up your file seach app and search for any (mpg, mp4, m2ts or ts) files by latest date method. if you find any, then that will show you that the unit is working. now, you just need to make a graph and save it. i would recommended calling it video.grf for the time being. i will coding the app to expect that file only. i'll come back later to see if you are available. or someone else here can assist you with these things now so you get things ready by the time i am home and ready or if you prefer not to bother, i'll understand and move on to the next gig.Last edited by vhelp; 9th Oct 2013 at 15:28.

Okay, sorry I have had nothing to report. Today, I got my 15 FT USB Cable. Going to try it as soon as the kids leave my living room. I will update as soon as I can.

Like I said before I got 2 bad ones from them. I exchanged the 1st 1512/1519 I bought and still had the same problem. I was starting to think it was something I was doing wrong until I tried the usb cable that came with my older 1212. It's frustrating that they didn't source their cables better but at least the fix is simple.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway. -
gll99, True! Glad I ordered the cable when I did. Headache solved/taken car of. Now, time to clear off my DVR.
It Started In Texas -
Glad to read that all works now.
We have had topics on here in the past when the real villain was a cable. Of course the original cable might have been fine and the fault lay with the joiner/extension (a lower rating so not supporting the higher bandwidth required).
Does not matter now but it is a lesson for those that who might consider using cable-joiners/extensions in the future. -
Yeah, I didn't think it would make that much of a difference. Now, I know.

Okay, so I now have the capability to capture my DVR selections. What is the best way to put the captures on DVD? In WinTV 7, I have the output as TS (Best). Such a big file, but great quality. I can use ArcSoft ShowBiz, where I can set the output to other file types (MP4, M2TS, etc). I am trying to put a complete football game on one disc (preferrably DVD), but I can do Blu Ray as well). I captured one game to my PC, removed the commercials in Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD, but it takes quite a while to re-encode. I didn't think I would have to re-encode, but looking at the Detail, it was necessary. The end file is 10.4 GB, which only took about 7 hours!!! Now, I would like to add chapter marks, which I can do in Sony Vegas. Any help is appreciated, once again. I am currently looking up/researching this. Is it just best to go with ArcSoft ShowBiz and use the M2Ts output?

The M2TS extension output from Showbiz is fake in the sense that the file still contains 188-Byte packets. Unless they fix this at this time, internally it's still a .ts file with the wrong extension but it's possible they also change something else in the file.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG_transport_stream
Transport Stream had been originally designed for broadcast. Later it was adapted for usage with digital video cameras, recorders and players by adding a 4-byte timecode (TC) to standard 188-byte packets, which resulted in a 192-byte packet.[12][13] This is what is informally called M2TS stream. Blu-ray Disc Association calls it "BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream".[12] JVC called it TOD (possibly an abbreviation for "Transport stream on disc") when used in HDD-based camcorders like GZ-HD7.[14][15] The timecode allows quick access to any part of the stream either from a media player, or from a non-linear video editing system.[16] It is also used to synchronize video streams from several cameras in a multi-camera shoot.
For me, except for a few tests the final output is always in the .m2ts format so I personally use the TS extension to capture and then crop the beginning and end and convert the file to m2ts and add chapters using tsMuxerGui. This takes mere seconds to minutes. if I need more detailed cuts to remove commercials and a simple menu I use the Showbiz tools. After you've made all your cuts MultiAVCD is a nice tool if you want to put multiple videos on the same BR Disc with your own menus.
btw) I never convert my videos to DVD / vob (why take 1080i, 1080p or 720p and downgrade it back to 720x480)_ instead I create simple or more complex AVCHD on sl and dl dvd, dvdrw, BD25, BD/RE25 and BD/RE50. It's much quicker since there's no need to convert the video.Last edited by gll99; 11th Oct 2013 at 23:29.

I tried the TS file in TSMuxeR and it stopped, too many errors. Do you change the frame rate settings, in TSMuxeR?
Okay, it's working now. I left it set to VBR instead of CBR. Right on, I will leave it at the best quality for blu ray. What is another program option for putting M2TS on Blu Ray?Last edited by V Bot; 12th Oct 2013 at 00:25.

I now have a blu ray folder (Certificate, etc), but understand you cannot burn it to blu ray with aac audio, without problems. It has to be AC3, is this correct? I've been trying to convert in AvchdCoder, but it keeps giving me the error when converting audio.
