Phone shut down while saving video, video won't play

Can anyone help me? I have a Motorola Atrix HD. I was taking a video at a concert, and it was too large, I guess, and it shut my phone down. The video is THERE, it is 230 MB, and about 2 minutes long...so it's there, but I can't play it. Can anyone help me?

Yes, I have downloaded it to my computer, and it doesn't play on there, either.

If it didn't properly end recording, it may be corrupt.

See if it can be recognized in MediaInfo (and if so, what are the specs of the text readout?).

I thought I had read something somewhere that said you can repair the corruption by editing the hex header....I am cluelessabout that.

What am I looking for in that Media Info?

Yeah, well that's the 1st portion. Is there any more, or did you just truncate the remainder? Right now, it's only showing the container, with no list of audio or video streams.

That is all the information it gave me. I tried a video from the same phone that I know works, and saw that there should be a bunch more information...but this is all I got from the corrupt video.

Oooh, not so good. Can you do a hex dump of the 1st ~100 bytes of a known good and the bad?

Open in a Hex Editor (like HxD) and do a print screen of the readout. Like this:

Not sure if this is what you mean? the top is the known good file, the bottom is the bad file.


There IS stuff there, it's not just all 00, but you do have to scroll quite a bit to get to it.

The area after "free" in the second example means an area with nothing in it but you need to see if if structure and data is corrupted. Looks like an MP4 so download
Atomic Parsley and run the command line "AtomicParsley /path/your.mp4 -T" This will display something similar to:

Look for errors. If you are lucky, you can recover from one of the services mentioned. The reason most charge is that MP4 files are particularly hard to recover manually
because the "atoms" are all linked together and so are their byte counts.

If you are not lucky, you will have a whole file of "free" hex 00 and that's equivalent to nothing. The 062E08 in front of free means 405000 bytes of free so hopefully
there's the rest of your 230 MB of data.

Thanks for your help, all. I got my video fixed from the mp4repair site. However, it is in landscape mode, and I shot it in portrait....small problem, compared to NOT being able to view it, right?

It will only play on my computer, tho...anyone know how to make it play on my phone? THANKS all for all your help!

Rotate & Re-encode (at highest available bitrate appropriate for the phone). For the computer, just use a player app that allows playback-time rotation.

Some media players have the ability to rotate the video during playback. SMPlayer and PotPlayer for example.

To rotate the video permanently try AviDemux. Open the video, under Video Output select a codec and Configure it (use settings compatible with your phone). Use the Filters button to add the Transform -> Rotate filter. Set the Output Format to MP4 Muxer. Save.
