I looked through the accessories folder and only found wordpad. What gives?

I do have 6.5gbs ram running win8 64bit so I don't have performance issues but I'd still prefer the zero impact lightweight that is notepad compared to a suite component like wordpad.

Edit - I didn't think this was important enough to put in the main forum for the computer sub category hence its here in offtopic.

I have it-it's in accessories. I'm running Classic Shell and Stardock Start 8 and found it easily. I would be crippled without Notepad.I am running Windows 8 Pro/64, what version are you running?

Ok it took me awhile as it seems like a lot of programs don't have the "about" option in help anymore to find the system version. I had to open the calculator to find it - its 6.2 build 9200.

Edit - sorry its win8pro/64 also.

MS, at least in my version of W8 64, renamed the accessories folder to 'Windows Accessories', apparently to make it a bit harder to find.
Notepad and WordPad are still there. I also use Start 8 to make the OS at least usable for me. I don't have a touch screen, MS! Don't want one, MS!

I wish MS would just leave things that work alone and fix crap that doesn't work. Paint was a nice program, now it's convoluted and weird, JMO. End of rant.

  5. When you are on the metro screen you can type the name of the program you want to run. A list will come up and you can select the program you want to run.

@redwudz - I'll have to look closer again than. I did make a shortcut so I'm one click away from the windows accessories folder but I could only find wordpad in there. Hmm.....

As for the touch screen stuff it doesn't really bother me as I've only been using the win7 desktop portion. One click of the desktop tile and I'm in normal windows.

ANd its not that big of a deal to shutdown either, just an extra click. Stupid yes but hardly worth getting riled up over now that I know where it is.

@hudsonf - where do I type it? I'm not on that computer right at the moment.

  7. When on the start (metro) screen just type the name of the program and the search screen pops up. You don't have to type in any special place.

    Thanks.

By the way they don't want us calling it metro anymore. What's its official designation? Is it just back to being a "gui" and that's it, no name?

I think they call it Modern now because the name Metro was being used by another company. Windows 8.1 final will be out around the 17'th as a free update for Win 8.

    Thanks hudsonf.

I just got back on my win8 computer and got to the start screen and typed notepad and bingo! There it is.

How do you pin it to the start bar? I mean the taskbar in the desktop mode? I didn't see an option in the menu commands to do it.

On my computer when I typed notepad, on the left hand side the Apps menu appeared. I right mouse clicked on notepad and got the options menu.

Notepad is under Windows Accessories on my PC as well. Even if you don't know where it is, you should be able to use it. Type the word "notepad" in the Start Screen to bring up a link for it. To find where it is, right click on the link, and select "Open file location" on the bar at the bottom of the screen.

Glad it was found. We're hoping that Microsoft will still allow Windows users to create SOMETHING of their own in the future - I know they prefer us to adopt a "sit back, watch and consume" behavior instead of "lean forward and create". I suspect we'll have "transaction fees" eventually when Microsoft can track every keystroke, every WinStore App's usage and eventually we'll be receiving billings for X number of keystrokes. Oh boy. I can hardly wait.

Thanks for helping a win 8 newbie everybody.

And yes I was able to use it by typing notepad on the start screen. I just couldn't find notepad.exe in the windows accessory folder for some reason.
