  1. Hi there,

I'm tryiny to convert MKV's to Avi's using XMedia Recode 3.1.7.2. It works okay and the sound and audio synchs fine but the AVI file ends up being more than twice the size of the original MKV. Are there any settings I should be changing before I encode to prevent this from happening?

    Thanks

size = bitrate x running time

Check the video compression settings, especially the bitrate, since it's implicated by the above formula.

Yes, change the bitrate. Under the video tab click on the blue calculator button next to the Rate control mode, change the output file size and xmedia recode will adjust the bitrate for you.

  4. Thanks for the replies.

I've tried doing what you've suggested but it's still creating a huge file. Under the video and audio tabs, am I supposed to be setting the mode to convert or copy?

    thanks

Why do you need an avi? So it works on standalone dvd players and such devices. Choose then the dvd player preset.

You can edit MKV files with VideoReDo TVSuite. You can install it for a 30 day trial before you make your mind up. No limitations during the trial.

What kind of editing? Just cut? Or edit in advanced editors?

Depends largely on how it will be used and if you care about quality. Any conversion reduces quality. To maintain quality (as much as possible), the avi output will be larger than the mkv (as you have already noted).
