  1. I have a Sony Home Theater and a Vizio TV that I have my Computer hooked up to. I have a VGA out of the computer, to the "RGB/Comp" on the TV. I then have the "TV Out" 3.5 to the Home Theater "TV In." The "TV out" to the receiver doesn't work in the RGB/Comp mode.
I thought whatever comes out of the TV would come out of the TV out, but it doesn't seem to.

I can't remember, if it worked after this, but I switched the HDMI audio from my DVR to the Home Theater to Digital Optical.

Not sure if it's in the TV or the Home Theater. I sometimes listen to audio from my computer and would like to hear it from my home theater. I can hear it on the TV, but not from my receiver.

    Everything else works fine.

    Thank you,
    Chris.

  2. I find your post be be very confusing. Like, what does this mean?

I thought whatever comes out of the TV would come out of the TV out, but it doesn't seem to.
You need an audio cable from the computer to the Receiver. VGA doesn't carry audio.

  3. monoprice.com has a VGA with an audio cable wrapped in. The VGA goes out with the audio from my sound card to the TV "VGA" (RGB/Comp).
I then have "TV Out" to the receiver but there is no sound in TV mode.

    Chris.

So you have VGA from the computer to the TV. And analog audio from the computer to the analog input on the TV associated with its VGA input? Forgetting the receiver for the time being, do you get audio on the TV using this setup?

This still isn't clear. You have a "TV Out" output (analog or digital?) on your TV -- and that's connected to an input on the receiver called "TV In"? And your getting no sound from the receiver when its set to "TV"?

The TV audio out will likely only output audio decoded by the TV (ie: from in the internal tuner). It likely will not pass any audio input from another source.

You should be able to confirm in the TV User Manual.

Nothing in the manual. I do get audio from this set up. The TV is playing audio, but the receiver is not playing what is on the TV.

It worked at one time. Now it doesn't.

  7. Do you get sound from the receiver if you use the TVs internal tuner?

The point of this is to verify that the connection between the TV's output and the receiver's input is correct, and that the receiver is set to the correct input. Ie, first verify that all the cabling is correct, then make sure each component is set to send audio to the correct output and receive audio from the correct input, then figure out if there are any setup options in the TV that would enable proper routing of the analog input to the analog output.

It sounds like the pass through for sound on the TV isn't working, so I would just do something different.

Can't you just run the audio out from your computer to your surround amp? If you need the TV tuner sound from the TV to the surround amp, then use the TV sound out.

I don't use the TV sound system at all, just my surround amp. It's one extra device to switch on, but I've gotten used to it. It does computer sound and sound from my DVR and HTPC and WDTV and TV tuner. They all output digital coaxial audio and I have a coaxial audio switcher to select the amplifier input. The WDTV has a optical>coaxial converter.

  9. And in a pinch you can use a Y adapter to send audio from the computer to both the TV and the receiver.

  10. I also don't use the TV sound very much, except when watching the news or something.

OK, I think I may of found something. I took the audio from the computer and put it right into the receiver "TV in." I got no sound.
I have two "TV IN's." One TV In, Digital Audio and a RCA "TV In." I think it could be that if my receiver detects Digital Audio TV In, it shuts off the RCA TV In. This would explain why it used to work. I used to have it RCA and I switched to Digital Audio.

I will test it out and see another way.

  11. OK, I got it. I switched the RCA TV IN to Video 2 on the front and it works. I would guess that only one "TV In" works. You have to chose one or the other, you cant use both.

    Thank you for the help,
    Chris.
