Is there a way to install ...
Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V1 and V2
... with out disturbing all the existing codecs?
Advanced Codecs will install that codec (I think) but they say they will unplug all other unnecessary codecs. I don't want to disturb all the existing codecs because I am not sure which codec makes my video play now. I am trying to re-encode the video in the subject codec so it WILL run on other computers.
Thanks!
Bob

Hmm??
I tried encoding with ffdshow under VirtualDub and Handbrake on the first pc and then carried over the files to the 2nd pc. Only the one from Handbrake worked on the 2nd computer. The ffdshow/VirtualDub one shows the video noise again.
I used the option under ffdshow "MS MPEG4 v2".
Why Handbrake works and not VirtualDub/ffdshow not is ... well I would like to keep the videos in avi format.
Thanks!

Is this a possible 32bit/64bit os issue? I've only recently setup a computer with win8 64bit and its my first 64bit os. I don't know when I'll encounter issues with the wrong software versions.
Was your "first" pc a 32bit os and the 2nd a 64bit?
If there aren't two versions of ffdshow please disregard this post.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I am using 32bit on both pc's.
I can convert the video to uncompressed or logarith lossless codec and the converted file plays fine... but either noise or blank screen with any other codec I try to convert to.
Here is the mediatab printout from the troublesome video file...

If your "computer details" are not outdated, then
https://www.videohelp.com/tools/ASF-Codec
should be what you're looking for (unzip, right-click, install, use in VirtualDub).
{ on Windows Vista and Seven, things are much more convoluted, sadly. } -
The current video uses lossless x264 compression . Another option is to use a player on other computers that doesn't require installed codecs e.g. vlc, mpchc , smplayer etc...
Or if you still want to convert, use a converter that doesn't require installed codecs e.g. ffmpeg based ones like tencoder, winff etc... -
If you want to use the avi container you shouldn't encode to h.264. Avi doesn't support all the features of avc.
As el heggunte mentioned, if your profile is out of date and you're using vista or later, 3rd party codecs are not a good idea anyway. My solution in windows 7 was to use software that had the codec libraries included.
