What programs paid and free are capable to cut .AVI with smart rendering?
Something like virtualdub or better something more advised, and that it will select codecs for re-compression automatically (unlike virtualdub whereby you have to set the codecs manually).
Doing automatic cueing on scene changes would nice to have as well.

You appear confused by the term since re-compression and smart rendering are incompatable.

Smart rendering is where the file is rendered with all the current attributes including codec and only changes are rendered.

You can use avidemux to stream copy for simple edits (no filters). You just set video to copy, audio to copy and select your file container. Not quite the same as smart rendering.

Vegas can do smart rendering but 'AVI' is rather vague. I think it can do that on lossless codecs but not on lossy ones.

I'm not confused. In VirtualDub you can do framebyframe editing, and use option smart rendering with fast recompress. That will recompress only the frames around the edited parts. But, you are required to select the same codec that was used for compression of the .AVI manually.
I'm looking a program that will work with any codecs that were used in AVI.

Perhaps similar to http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/taw4.html, yet TMPGENC doesn't work with AVI. And something much more lighter than that.

Forget that, you nearly all video formats can also be put inside an avi container.

Can you please recommend a program, that can cut away unneeded fragments and that has smart rendering for AVI files?

No, we can't. To repeat: AVI is a container that can accommodate many encoded formats. That includes DivX, Xvid, dv-AVI, decoded RIFF format compressed with huffyuv or Lagarith, etc., etc., etc., etc. See what we mean? What codec was used to create the AVI's ?

  7. If what you are looking for is fram accuracy cutting with only re-encoding of the "snips" at the ends of the cut perhaps SolveigMM Video Splitter.

If you you could live with cuts at I-frames and no re-encoding then besides avidemux already mentioned perhaps Video To Video, SolveigMM Avi Trimmer + MKV, ...

Use MediaInfo, File -> Export -> Text to see the content of the AVI.

Exactly, SolveigMM Video Splitter, as it supports mpg in addtion to avi, and I guess few other containers. Indeed looking for software re-encoding of the "snips".
What are the alternatives please? I would like something a bit more advanced and perhaps having a feature of oing automatic cueing on scene changes.

What jagabo said. Virtualdub, IMO is the best free video editor and VideoRedo TV Suite is the best frame accurate pay editor.

Does Videoredo supports smart rendering for mpg and avi? And, does it has reverse play and play with different speeds, as Womble does?
