Some avi files will not play on the Google Nexus 7 (2012). Does someone know what the requirements are? A link perhaps? It seems to me that with all the video converters there are out there that can tweek almost any parameter it should be easy.

Have you tried different video players? Like vlc and bsplayer. Search in in google play.
Or else use android presets in the converters. Like in vidcoder, xmedia recode, etc.
