    Hello,

I am so new to video and there are is much to learn. I would like to edit my video from my Nikon D7100 in Avidemux but it seems to stutter and is choppy. I don't understand why.

The .mov files play just fine in WMP or VLC, but from reading, I think I need to convert the highly compressed .mov and its PCM audio stream to something else so I can edit it with AVIDEOMUX.

So my workflow would probably be converter, then avidemux, then upload to youtube.

VLC says my video is H264 MP4 AVC 1920x1080 at 29.97 in Planar 4:2:0 YUV full scale encoding. Audio is PCM S16 LE (sowt) stereo at 48000 Hz and 16 bit sample rate.

Any comments that can help me understand this and not have to invest a week are appreciated. I have spent the entire day trying to understand why avidemux is stuttering and I cannot convert it. Perhaps I should buy a video editing program but then it is confusing from AVS Video Editor to Premier Elements etc.

I have simple needs. Thank you in advance for any advice!!!!

Bless you for responding. I am a techie at work for SQL Server etc but I need to invest in understanding video like I understand still cameras and some of the audio....

avidemux seems like a solid free simple editor. I have a 1920x1080 video from my D7100 that I have put much time into with my family and a backdrop although I need to put a small fade in and face out at the beginning and the end. Also because my shooting had some clutter on the sides, I need to place a black overlay over 160 pixels on the left and right of the frame. Avidemux seems to do this simply and nicely. However playing the video does not work and I tried converting it once and it did the poor audio on the output again. From other searching comments it seems that the .mov package has some things in it that are hard to handle.

  4. Try Video Output: "mpeg4 AVC (x264)" output from AviDemux, Quality 18 (under configuration), Audio Output: AAC lav, Output format MP4 muxer. Even if it doesn't play well on your sysem, upload it to YouTube and see what happens. You may want to resize to 1280x720 as well.

I might have not problem investing $40-$100 in a video converting and editing package but because I am an occasional user and want such investment to last for at least awhile, I am unsure what to consider. Do I learn the nuances of VirtualDub or heaven forbid Lightworks, or do I purchase something like AVS Video Editor or something else. If I go with a tool I would want it to be mainstream so I can find easy searching tips that others have done before me. You may recommend VirtualDub. That seems quite a bit to learn but perhaps.... Windows platform needed.

  6. Download the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio (and/or Premiere Elements and/or Pinnacle 16.) makes life simpler.

You are a good man (or woman...). I seem my problem. It seems that the compressed PCM stream is not liked by avidemux. I converted the video .mpv file with Any Video converter and now avidemux is handling it.

However, also when I use MP4 Muxer, VLC cannot play it even if suffix is .mp4. However, if I put it on AVI muxer it works.

Edit: When I used AAC (lav) no sound was encoded in my .avi file.
