I am using a Sony Digital HD Videocassette Recorder (GV-HD700/1) and I'm trying to import video from MiniDV (SonyDVC) tapes that someone else recorded. When inserting the tape an error message appears telling me to "Change Tape To Correct Format". I have not been able to find a solution. The video was recorded 3 years ago (2010) on unknown cameras that I do not have access to. I think they might have been Sony cameras, but there is a possibility that they were Canons. Any help with this issue would be very much appreciated.

Well, what's recorded on the tape -- standard def DV or HDV? Whichever it is, you need to set playback of the Sony unit to that format.

Did the tapes come from overseas?

I have tried it on DV and HDV settings, both were unsuccessful. I believe they were shot in HDV. Not 100% sure. The tapes were not bought overseas.

It doesn't matter if they were BOUGHT overseas....were they possibly recorded somewhere outside of the United States?

They were recorded in the United States of America.

Okay, then. Is is possible they are DV format, recorded in LP speed? Could the audio setting be 12-bit instead of 16-bit? Is there any way you can contact the person who made the recordings to check what format and settings were used?

another possibility is they are HDV but are 720p60 and sonys can't handle that format. you'd need a jvc unit to capture from.
