is that really a surprise? how many times in a day do you use google to navigate to a site that contains content you are searching for?

  3. It's the loss of their video assets (youtube, etc.) that caused the big drop in web traffic. Not search results. Though, if people aren't getting search results they aren't (to some extent) navigating to other pages to get that content.

FWIW, I was on-line when that happened, and verified that MANY other sites became sluggish or non-responsive at all (timing out or something). Today Google is much more than just a search engine

Just about every site uses javascript to access google-analytics.com, ajax.googleapis.com, googlesyndication.com, googleadservices.com, googletagmanager.com, etc. So if google goes down all the sites that access google get very slow, waiting for google.

I don't mind that Google went down at all. I don't use Google anymore. I didn't like their tracking and profiling. It seemed every site I visited had tailored ads from the last Google searched site. Now I use https://duckduckgo.com/ And there are other search sites that don't log and sell your searches to ad agencies or anybody else that pays them enough.

What Red said (no rhyme intended): that's been my experience also, and I am also a Duck user.

I don't mind using google to search so much, but I don't like the tracking they do in other sites either.

Actually, I'd probably use chromium more if it weren't for the fact you can't automatically delete history/cache upon exit. At least without a plugin, which I wouldn't bother to check out because I don't really want a browser that doesn't include that feature.

Adding the DoNotTrackMe plugin to firefox helps a lot. It's great. One of those things, after five minutes you wonder how it tool so long to hear about it. I think you can get it for chrome too but somehow I doubt it'd work as well there ....

Exactly what I meant. Now, and sadly, "más de lo mismo"

Facebook Takes Down Web: Third-Party JavaScript Strikes Again

Posted by Alex Pinto on Mon, Feb 11, 2013 @ 03:29 PM

JavaScript performance is always on the mind of engineers as they chip away at average page load times. But occasionally a JavaScript failure is so bad that it bubbles up to the attention of the average web user. That’s exactly what happened last Friday, when the "Login with Facebook" script took down a number of sites completely. Any users who happened to be logged into Facebook (so: many, many users) were redirected away from sites like CNN, Gawker, MSNBC and others, to be shown a Facebook error page.

    .........

The issue was mostly found on media sites that use the Login script to encourage users to share on Facebook and comment on articles under their Facebook personas. These sites experienced a momentary blip for a segment of their visitors, which likely upset their advertisers and sponsors. For any eCommerce sites running the script, it would have resulted in immediate loss of sales, much as last June's Facebook outage did. This event is a reminder any script served from a third party can bring down a site without warning.
