  1. Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it when I searched.

    Sony BDP-S470
    Vizio ES370
    ATI AIW MMC 8.8
    MPEG-2
    352X480 NTSC

My recordings appear to be changed from 4:3 to 16:9 and I don't know which one.
I'm sure I probably have a setting wrong but don't know which.
I'm using my computer as a DVR, I transfer the mpeg to a flash drive and pop it in the Sony for viewing
    Any help would be great

352x480 is HalfD1 and shows up more like 9:16 in some software apps....MPEGVCR being one of the apps.

  3. I've also experimented recording with 640x480 and 720x480 and they all display on the TV like they've been converted from 4:3 to 16:9

  5. The Vizio does have 4 setting, Normal Wide Panoramic and Stretch. Right now I have it set at Normal.

Then why are you saying they're playing as if they've been changed to 16:9? Does the TV set have them fill the screen from left to right, making everyone look fat?

Also, check the MPEGs in MediaInfo. Maybe they really do have the DAR set as 16:9.

  7. I have black bars top and bottom, and the people look short and fat. I think maybe I have the settings for the Sony or the Vizio wrong.

Also being a newbie I'm not sure what MediaInfo and DAR are, sorry

Didn;t you omit a few things?

Recording what source? Tape? TV? cable box?
Capture card? ATI MMC comes with a capture card, right?
    MediaInfo: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaInfo

Possibly. The Vizio setting sounds OK (my Sony is similar). The player may be set up for a 4:3 TV where yours is 16:9. You should go into the setup menu and make sure it's outputting for a 16:9 or widescreen TV set.

Click on the MediaInfo link and post the text screen of the video.

Assuming the video streams (on a video blu-ray disc and/or flash drive) are appropriately flagged as (16:9 or 4:3), they will appear in the correct aspect ratio if played on a Sony blu-ray player connected through HDMI provided the following settings are chosen on the blu-ray player:
    • setup>screen settings>TV type>16:9 or 4:3 (according to the connected TV; almost always 16:9, I haven't encountered a 4:3 TV yet with HDMI input)
    • setup>screen settings>screen format>fixed aspect ratio (instead of original)
I routinely put 4:3 SD video on blu-ray, followed the prescribed arguments for encoding SD video for blu-ray with x264, and initially always wondered why they all became horizontally stretched on playback instead of getting pillarboxed on a 16:9 TV. I thought I was encoding them improperly until I figured out the settings above. This is just for Sony, the same blu-ray played with PowerDVD on a PC displays 4:3 correctly; other blu-ray players may have required settings of their own.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".
