I recently bought an Elgato Game Capture HD to record shows from my cable DVR via component. I'm very happy with the hardware, the capture quality, and the software. However, when I edit the captured video to take out the commercials and output to "Original MP4" file, the audio and video become out of sync.
The beginning of the file before the first edit point is fine, but after the edit point the sync is off and remains so for the rest of the video. I suppose I could take the raw .TS file and try editing it in another app, however it's very convenient to do everything in one app, and I quite like the simplicity and smoothness of the Game Capture HD editor.
Does anyone know what is causing the sync issue after editing? Also, if I can't get it to work, what is a good small app for editing .TS files (preferably freeware)? Not looking for anything huge and complex like Sony Vegas.

One thing I don't think helps is that when you record with the Game Capture HD software, it splits the video across multiple files, starting a new .TS file every 30 minutes. So when you go to edit the video it ends up joining and splitting files, which I guess messes with the a/v synch. Is there a setting where you can turn off file splitting while recording? I can't seem to find one.

I tried exporting the video to MP4 without editing it, but the a/v sync issue still happens. This time it starts out in sync but gradually loses sync as time passes. The raw .TS files are in sync if I open them in VLC and the whole video is in sync on the preview timeline in the capture software. So, the error must be happening in the conversion process to MP4. Unfortunately, the only options for exporting with the program are "MP4 Original" and "MP4 1080p". I can't output to a single .TS file. Suggestions?

have you tryed using acrsoft showbiz
its lightweight all in one record and edit. just like your current Game Capture HD editor. should work for the EL gato when recording too,if not record with your elgato default software then drag n drop your file in showbiz. it support .mts, .ts, and mp4 files types.( i have the hd pvr2)
edit then produce.
i don't think showbiz is free from arcsoft, but it is from hauppauge.
come with the drivers for the hd pvr 2 and a Personal Logo applications but after installing just uninstall the pvr 2 driver and the Personal Logo applications. heres the link: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hdpvr2-gaming.html
download file HD PVR 2 CD 1.6
here is a cnet download to but im not sure if it the same. -
I downloaded Showbiz and gave it a try. It didn't detect the Elgato, so I couldn't capture. I tried merging and editing the .TS files created with the Elgato software and it it worked. The exported file was in sync. However, there was a lot of re-encoding going on when I exported, which I was trying to avoid if possible. I also like the Elgato's software better for editing, but at least I have a solution for keeping the videos in sync now. Thanks!

Check out https://www.videohelp.com/tools/Smart-Cutter-Ps-Ts
It does not re-encode video, so it saves the video/audio out and you can use it freely as it only adds a watermark at the very beginning and the ending few seconds of your edited project. Pay $40 and those go away. Only problems I've had with it is that it will crash, So save your editing work as you progress and just restart the program. It's quick and sync was not a problem for me.
It's worth a look. -
well i was hoping the showbiz would give you an all-n-one but since it didn't you could try windows movie maker too for editing, exporting uploading, ect. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker#t1=overview. its free and you can edit .ts, ect.
what are your try to do with your .mp4 file after you export/convert from .ts? -
I contacted Elgato tech support and they told me to uninstall the driver and software and sent me a link to a newer beta version. I installed it, and it works! The edited videos are now in sync. So now I'm able to use the native Game Capture HD software, and I'm quite happy with that. Thanks for the suggestions, all.
DARR, the edited mp4 is the final file, and I'm not trying to do anything further. They will be moved to a hard drive I use for my streaming media server. Thanks.
