I’ve just built a new computer and am starting to install software. I’ve been using HDV Split to download video from my Canon HV30 on my old XP machine for some time. Going to the HDV Split page, I see it does not support Win 7. To top that off, I just realized my video is downloaded via Firewire. I do not have Firewire on my new motherboard. Not being a video guru, but just a casual user, how am I going to be able to download the video on my new computer?

Ok, just looked at the manual, and it looks like a USB cable came with the camera. I have the manual here, but no idea where the box is, but I never throw anything away. So, maybe I’ve answered my question. I must have bought the Firewire cable as an aftermarket accessory, but I’ve slept since then. I’ve had the camera since 2009. I can still download via USB cable, right?

However, what program can I use to download the video that is compatible with Win 7, 64 bit?

The USB connection is for transferring still images. You can only transfer HDV footage via firewire. HDVSplit works fine on Windows 7, but any problems you encounter might be with the driver to the camcorder. I had to go into my device manager to get Win 7 to install the legacy driver. (I can't remember the exact steps, but if you do a google search, I'm sure you'll find it, easy-peasy.)

I have a Canon HV40 in my arsenal, and capture tons of footage with HDVSplit -- but ONLY through Firewire. (I had to get a PCI card for the Firewire port, but it was less than $15 at newegg.)

Bummer. I was hoping to not have to buy a card regardless of cost, but I guess it’s either that or a new camera, which I’ve been considering for some time, but just can’t justify the cost.

A quick peek at Newegg and I see a lot of cards. Brands I’ve never heard of. I’ve heard of Vantec, Rosewill, and StarTech. If I look at the ones with lots of reviews and rated 5 Eggs, this Rosewill Card stands out. If I search by best rating, it is number one, and only $13. Sounds like that should work for me.

The card I have (from a new PC build within the last year) is a Rosewill, and as I recall, it was about the same price as the one to which you've linked. Mine works like a charm with both HDVSplit (for HDV) and WinDV (for standard def DV); although it seems I had an initial driver issue in Win 7. I really can't remember, but I think I just switched drivers under its Properties to AVC Tape Device. As I recall, it was real simple, and I don't think I had to download anything.

Since you own an HDV30, you might want to look for additional helpful advice from http://hddv.net/forum.php

I ordered the card yesterday. No rush, cause I’m still using my XP machine, so I can download videos, then move them to the new machine via thumb drive for processing. Have to upgrade my Vegas software from 9 to 12. Hopefully, the camera and card will work without too much work on my part. I’m looking forward to editing video on the new computer. Editing video on this old XP machine is smooth, but it took 4 hours to render a 10 minute video last week. The new computer should cut that down to a few minutes, and I’ll probably feel like doing videos more often.

I’ve been a member of the http://hddv.net/forum.php forum for a while, but find their rules about searching before asking a question to be a bit on the ridiculous side. I get answers here on this forum that I can’t get on that forum, but if I have problems, I’ll post back, or maybe do some searching on that site.
