When I burn this movie to DVD using DVDStyler I get choppy video. I don't know why this is happening because it is 23.976 fps.

    I'm guessing it's because it's M=3, N=18 when it should be M=3, N=12.
I used Avidemux to convert an .mkv to .m2v. If I go to Avidemux and change the Gop Size from 18 to 12 will that fix it?

NTSC dvd video should be 29.97 fps. Somewhere or other,
    there should be a 23.976 > 29.97 pulldown step.

  3. Right, and because it's not DVD compliant I suspect DVDStyler reencodes. It has to as it will never author in the state it's in. Maybe the jerkiness resulted from the reencode (perhaps it added a duplicate frame in every 5).

No. Although it'll never author with the original GOP settings (and they have to be changed), it'll be reencoded anyway (unless DVDStyler can be told to just to apply 3:2 pulldown, which I doubt). Never used it myself, and any video to be authored should be DVD compliant already.

  4. Is DVDStyler using "Copy" for the video?

Try using the original MKV and let DVDStyler do the encoding.

I encode it myself using Avidemux because HCgui didn't want to do it and I only do it like that because if I let DVDStyler encode it it'll make it bad quality. :/ The weirdest thing of all is HCgui didn't want to so maybe it's something with the original file that it doesn't like. I have no idea. I use FitCD with HCgui normally and have no problem but when that doesn't work and I do it with Avidemux putting the filters FitCD has it comes out choppy when burned.

  6. What's the script you're using? Short before and after samples, 10 second ones with steady movement, might be helpful too. Particularly, the AviDemux result should pinpoint the problem.

Doesn't HCEnc give you an error message? What is it?

You're not intending to stick a big DTS audio track into a DVD5, are you? Shouldn't you convert it to AC3 and extract it for muxing later?

23.976 fps is ok as long as 3:2 pull-down has been applied in the encoding process. I really do not know if avidemux can do this but I would have thought that Henc can.

But I think your real problem, along with the above, is the bitrate of the video. 1711 kbps is simply too low. You said that Henc was giving poor quality but even discounting the jerkiness you surely can not say that the picture currently looks great.

Yes, HCEnc will encode at progressive 23.976fps and apply pulldown. I suspect the jerkiness is from AviDemux inserting a duplicate frame after every 4 frames to output the required 29.97fps and that would easily account for the jerkiness. That's why I asked for samples. I don't use AviDemux for anything and have no idea how it encodes for DVD.
