  1. Hi there,

I'm having issues burning blu-ray discs.

I've filmed some footage using a HDV camera and captured it from tape, the footage properties state 1440 x 1080. Full HD(V)

I've then edited this footage using Sony Vegas Pro 10.0 in a project with the following properties (see attached image)

and burned to bluray using these settings (see attached image)

The burn completed successfully and plays back fine however when I took it to a projectionist friend of mine to see how it looked on a cinema screen, he told me that it was standard definition footage, burned on to a blu ray disc.

I don't understand where I've gone wrong, any help would be massively appreciated here as I feel out of options :S
And does it make a difference if I render it as 1920x1080 HDV or 1920x1080 HD?

    Jess

It's a shame you didn't see it for yourself. It could be he is being a bit of video snob and anything that isn't 100% professionally made would look imperfect to him.

That bluray template looks right to me for high def.

Do you have a copy of the disc you sent? Do you have the output files at least?

If you have the output available use mediainfo on the m2ts files in the bdmv/stream folder. Than you can be sure of what the final resolution and bitrate was.

(edit sorry it looks like you did visit this fellow, but you didn't mention if you viewed the material on the screen yourself or not)

  3. I've just run the blu ray disc through mediainfo and the results are attached.

I'm not crazy am I? This is telling me that the footage is HD quality?!

That looks like HD mpeg2 to me too.

By the way, we usually tell people to use the Tree or Text view in Mediainfo, as they give fairly detailed information.

  5. It's telling you the video has an HD frame size. That doesn't mean it's HD quality. One can take a VCD and upscale it to 1920x1080. But it won't be HD quality. You need to look at the video to see if it really has high resolution, good color definition, etc. But it's not obvious to me that you did anything wrong with your editing and encoding.

Extract a short sample of your video and post it here. People will take a look at it.

  6. there is couple of things that come from this situation:

-set project settings to match your clip, which is HDV not fullHD
-Vegas is upscaling interlaced 1440x1080 to 1920x1080, not ideal, this is known fact (all videoeditors) -choose Blu-Ray1440x1080 H.264 instead, I think there is only 16Mbit maximum but anyway that is what I'd try
-your codec is 25Mbit for mpeg2, as example from above I'd try H.264 - choose H.264 codec instead,
-PCM as for audio is waste of space also, but has nothing to do with video quality, just info,.., you can choose AC3

-last thing - the quality of your original is very important, if it is so, so, following encoding will not make it at least the same, it will look a bit worse

EDIT: I just noticed that even mpeg2 has a choice for 1440x1080 now so you can test that too first if you insist on mpeg2

  7. there is "a recipes" flowing around web how to make BD from HDV wihout having video re-rendered again, nowadays, 1440x1080 for mpeg2 is BD standard, you can export HDV with smart rendering out of Vegas, so you export HDV and use video only for BD, they added mpeg2 1440x1080 into specs after some time (after death of HDV). Sony in their ingenuity (of course it was intentional, their own video format btw) knock that mpeg2 1440x1080 off in the beginning of Blu-Ray era (and allowed H.264 1440x1080 at the same time, go figure)
