  1. Hey guys,

Newbie here. So I got this video recently and it's supposedly meant to be 4hrs long but when I play it on VLC it only plays until 2hr 37min or so. It works fine on MPC however.

The original file extension was .mp4. I've tried to convert it to another type such as .avi, and also tried using it in software which join videos and then convert them, but all these programs only convert the video up to the 2hr 37min mark.

Anyone experienced this before, and/or can suggest solutions eg. video repair software?

    Thanks in advance!

DivFix++ is only for AVI, though, isn't it? The OP doesn't have a complete AVI conversion from the MP4 source.

phxntm: Run the original MP4 through MediaInfo, in Tree/text mode, and copy the information given here. Maybe someone will be able to notice what VLC and the converters "don't like" about the MP4 (especially since, as you say, Media Player Classic seems to have no problems with it).
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

  5. Rather than convert it, try remuxing it. You can remux it as an MKV with MKVMergeGUI. It shouldn't take long and if MKVMerge finds a problem it should show it in the log file.

Video to Video Converter can also remux files. If you want to keep it as MP4, when you open it, select remux from the list of conversion options (I think it's the last one) and MP4 as the output container.

Just a quick question on this for others that may know... A 4 hour video might be quite large, does VLC have a file size limit?

  8. Thanks for your help so far guys, appreciated.

Here's the info from MediaInfo, the formatting after pasting here kinda irks my OCD-ness.

    General
Complete name *hidden for privacy purposes*
    Format : Flash Video
    File size : 1.23 GiB
    Duration : 4h 2mn
Overall bit rate : 726 Kbps
    _code : NetStream.Play.Complete
    _level : status
    _bytes : 163957155.000

    Video
    Format : AVC
    Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
    Format profile : Main@L3.0
    Format settings, CABAC : Yes
Format settings, ReFrames : 2 frames
    Codec ID : 7
    Duration : 4h 2mn
    Width : 640 pixels
    Height : 480 pixels
    Display aspect ratio : 4:3
    Frame rate mode : Constant
    Frame rate : 29.970 fps
    Color space : YUV
    Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
    Bit depth : 8 bits
    Scan type : Progressive
    Writing library : x264 core
    Color primaries : BT.601 NTSC
    Transfer characteristics : BT.709
    Matrix coefficients : BT.601

    Audio
    Format : AAC
    Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec
    Format profile : LC
    Codec ID : 10
    Duration : 4h 2mn
    Channel(s) : 2 channels
    Channel positions : Front: L R
    Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
    Compression mode : Lossy

I doubt VLC has a time limit, I have other movies longer than 2:37:00 and they work fine. Also, it wouldn't explain why I can't convert it past that point either.
As to where I got a 4hr long video from.. I'll leave that to your imaginations.

I've read solutions regarding MKVMergeGUI but have no idea how to use it lol.

Not sure where you got it but a little quik math says 1.2gb divided by 726kb bit rate and it get roughly 165 divided by 60 and its 2 hiurs and 45 minutes.
Awfully close to 2 hrs and 37 mintutes. I'd run atomicparsley with -T attribute and see what the mp4 atom tree looks like.
May be yhe time is messed up.

Did you find the cause of the problem?

To use MKVMergeGUI simply open the original video with it (I'm faily sure it'll open flash files) and click on the Start Muxing button down the bottom. MKVMergeGUI will output a new MKV containing the original video and audio etc. It doesn't take long.... As fast as your hard drive can read and write.
Sometimes, simple remuxing can solve odd playback problems. Media players use "splitters" to sperate the video and audio on playback. Sometimes they may have a splitter which has a bug for a particular format so remuxing the video into a different container can solve the problem.

If MKVMergeGUI has any difficulties, it'll display any warnings or errors in the window which opens while it's muxing.
