  1. Hello,
I just exported a movie from FCPX. It is 1080p 29.97p (about 62 mins long). On the export, I chose ProRes 422 and exported it as a QT movie. I'm not sure where to go from here as far as getting it on to a DVD without losing quality. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm moving you to our mac section.

Do you want to convert it to dvd-video? or just store on a dvd as a qt movie?

  3. Thanks for the reply. I'm actually wanting to put it on to a DVD so I can sell the movie so I'm trying to preserve the quality.

If your intent to create a DVD that will be playable in a standard consumer DVD player, some loss of quality is unavoidable. You will have to convert the ProRes 422 from its original format to 720x480 29.97 fps MPEG-2 video plus either ac3 or pcm audio, and author a DVD. See What Is DVD for more information on requirements and options for DVD audio and video.

I'm not sure what MPEG-2 converter to suggest for a ProRes source as it isn't something I'll ever need to use. For authoring already converted A/V files you could use Toast or DVDStyler + Burn.

FCPX should be able to "share" the project, then select DVD as output, either to burn via a selected optical drive, or as disc image.

  6. Great, thanks for the replies guys. If I share and then use DVD as output, how does that quality compare to Export Master File? Also, this is a 1080p movie about an hour long so could you tell me how that would come into play using either scenario?

  7. Also, it says the file size is about 70GB.

    quality, oops!!!
Your input file is HD, has a lot of informations (1920*1080 pixels = 2 073 600 different informations), your resulting file will keep just a few informations (720*480 pixels = 345 600 different informations)

DVD is convenient, but quality is not HD (so, if you want to preserve quality, burn a bluray, not a DVD )

    bye

Just to add my $0.02, because I get the feeling you don't exactly understand. It doesn't matter that you have a great source file, a DVD must comply to certain standards. If you export (share) it to DVD, it will convert/compress your movie to fit on a DVD. It will be substantial loss of quality, but that doesn't mean it won't be acceptable to the end user.

I would suggest you author/burn it to a Blu-ray Disc, you'll still get some reduction but not nearly as much as putting it on a DVD.
