  1. Not sure if I'm posting in the right place but here is my situation. I'm maxed out on storage on the external HD that I'm using in FCPX so I can't even get into the program now. I do have another external HD with nothing on it. I am wanting to free up space on the HD that I'm using in FCPX by moving all of it's contents to my other HD.
Can I move the contents to another HD and delete what is on the current HD that I'm using in FCPX without causing any problems? An additional note is that I have 400 GB of .mov files on the HD that I'm using in FCPX that I could move which would free up the amount of space that I need without having to resort to moving the Projects or Events files. Or can I just simply compress the folders without causing any problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  2. Close FCPX.

Copy -- don't move-- specific folders of source files onto your new drive.
Rename the original folders so FCPX doesn't see them.
Open FCPX and when it asks you where the file went, direct it to the new path.
If all is well -- check thoroughly-- you can delete the original folder.

It's also likely that FCPX is creating massive files on import, converting everything to Pro res, adding image stabilization, etc. Redirect where it creates them to the new drive.

Leave projects and events files alone. Do not try to compress anything!

  3. Thanks for the help. Here is a screenshot of what happened after I did this:
It is showing as a blue folder in the project file, but it is playing ok in the timeline. When I export, I am getting the message that seems to be getting a number of people that says "Project Won't Export, error -1" and then the frame number. The frame that is causing the error is actually this frame that is showing the blue folder. Any ideas?

  4. Nevermind, I figured it out. I just imported it back in from the original destination. Thanks for the other valuable information though, it helped me a lot!
