Are there any camcorders out there that can output to two things. I need one that outputs to an HDMI connection and to a composite one.

My Sony HDR-CX260V does both at the same time.

So a cheap camera will do it but the HDR-FX7 won't. Wow. I wonder if an XA10 will do both?

  4. The XA10 (and the HM70) output to both HDMI and composite.

XA10 specs here (you have to click on the specifications tab): http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/camcorders/professional-camcorders/xa10

    HM70 specs here: http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/specs.jsp?model_id=MDL102207&feature_id=03

I was curious about this, so I took two HD camcorders I had at arms length (Canon XA10 (60) and Sony CX12E (50)) and tested one after the other. I plugged the HDMI output to one TV, and the composite output to another. Ok; when HDMI is active (connected to TV, and TV duly acknowledges HDMI input and displays it), composite is blank. If I disconnect HDMI (or turn the TV off), composite output connected to its TV displays signal. Both camcorders behaved the same way. Conclusion:
    • you can't have both HDMI and composite outputting a signal at the same time.
    • HDMI takes priority; as long as a valid HDMI display is connected to and acknowledged, composite is muted
    • selecting between HDMI and composite outputs can't be forced or overidden (nothing in the menu)
It's silly and all that and the manufacturers have reasons of their own. But if simultaneous output is really required, I'd just get an HDMI-to-composite converter box with HDMI pass-through: HDMI display connected to pass-through, SD display to composite.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

No. Streaming of video to the internet is to this point an SD venture. I have not found any companies that do high school events that are streaming in HD which would then take component or HDMI. That is the only reason why I would need to down convert it to composite. I don't like it any better than probably you do but it is what it is. Whether we like it or not most places don't have the capability to upload at a fast enough rate to do HD yet. You may have the capability and other places do to, but most places just don't. We as a society are not as advanced technologically as we would like to think. Click on the link and you will see it says composite.

My test was flawed. I hooked the camera with both outputs to a tv and was able to switch the tv inputs with video on each.

After reading turk690 post, I tried with 2 displays. Composite was disabled when switched to HDMI.

Composite or component, on these camcorders, c'est la même chose: analogue (component HD/composite, s-video SD) and digital (HDMI) are not allowed to output at the same time.
