  1. Hello everyone,

I'm new here, but it seems to be a great site!

So... I bought the Philips BDP5406/F7 3D Blu-ray Disc Player and although it isn't the most popular player, I was pretty happy with it.
I didn't know about the existence of Cinavia and so, I made the mistake of upgrading the firmware.
Now I'm looking for a way to downgrade the firmware or replace it in some way.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Why?
What has Cinavia stopped you from doing?

Some players don't allow you to downgrade firmware. I don't know whether Philips is like that or not, but I mention it as a possibility. There's always some chance that the firmware prior to your upgrade understood Cinavia anyway.

KBeee does have a good point. Given that most BluRays do NOT contain Cinavia (almost nothing not made by Sony has it) and if you buy or rent original Cinavia protected discs they will play, it's not like you are totally screwed here. If your plan is to copy discs you haven't bought that contain Cinavia, then yes, that won't work.

My family always gives a rough treatment to all of our discs and so, I always make backups of everything. With Cinavia a big part of my backups are useless.
On the other hand, I bought this specific Blu ray player model because it seemed to play just about anything... its really wrong that an update changes that.

I know that the downgrade is a long shot... In its web page Philips left only the latest version of the firmware available. I'm sure that the firmware that came in the player out of the box didn't have Cinavia (I have tested it with backups that played perfectly before the update and that now are useless).

Now I know how Cinavia works, I know that my player is not ready for the dumpster if I don't find a solution; but I would really appreciate not having to buy another Blu ray player to have full functionality. Also, even with another Blu ray player there is always the risk of buying something already infected with Cinavia. My plan has always been to use backups of the discs I bought so I won't risk losing the originals to the misuse my family gives to discs.

  6. By the way... maybe instead of a previous firmware I can install a modified one or restore the original one. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
