I have a Yamaha CRW2100S CD-RW recorder on a SCSI bus and I installed a Pioneer DVR-A04 DVD-RW recorder on the secondary IDE bus as the master (there is nothing else on the second IDE bus). Nero version 5.5.8.0 finds the CD-RW okay, but it fails to find the DVD-RW. I installed the previous
version that I had (version 5.5.7.2) and it had no problem finding both drives. I also tried even earlier versions, but they didn't find the DVD-RW either (5.5.2.3 and 5.5.3.5).

I am using WIN2000Pro on a 1.8GHz P4 with 512MB of memory. Windows reports the DVD-RW drive working correctly. I have two 60GB hard drives on the primary IDE channel. There is no other software trying to access the DVD-RW.

To install all versions, I used the Nero install/ upgrade program provided.

    To recap:

    NERO VERSION-------FINDS BOTH DRIVES?
    5.5.2.3-----------------NO
    5.5.3.5-----------------NO
    5.5.7.2-----------------YES
    5.5.8.0-----------------NO

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm really eager to put the new DVD-RW through its paces (I'm waiting for the delivery of some bulk DVD-R and -RW disks, but I do have one of each, courtesy of Pioneer). Version 5.5.8.0 has DVD-Video capability, which the previous version does not, so I really need to get this to work.

  2. I had this problem with my a03 i was using win2k but everything was good when i went to:-
    control panel > system
click hardwre tab > device manager
go down to "ide ata/atapi controllers" (thats what it is on mine)
double click the secondary ide > advanced settings tab
set transfer mode to DMA (mine was on PIO only) but when i put it to dma it worked like a charm.

Thanks... I'll give this a try tonight!

  4. Are you sure you have a clean install of Nero? I had a problem when upgrading from 5.5.7.2 to 5.5.8.0. I completely uninstalled the software and installed 5.5.8.0 directly and everything works fine. Sees my DVR-104 fine.

I thought that I did - I just double-clicked on the NERO5580.EXE file and it upgraded itself. I'll also try this tonight (come to think of it, when I DOWNGRADED to 5.5.7.2, the program asked me to enter my serial number - annoying, at best, because I had to go dig up the original CD).

I think that QwSxCV's suggestion to set the secondary IDE bus on DMA only is right on target. When I try to play a DVD (purchased, of course) on the drive, it gives me an ocassional rapid stutter (but it records okay). The stutter was so bad, that I could not watch the movie on that drive, but had to switch to my SCSI DVD player.

  6. Yeah, that sounds exactly like a DMA problem. Running an IDE drive in PIO mode is like putting a speed governor on a Ferrari.

  7. Nero 5.5.8.0 worksfine with DVD-RW, burns it no problem, the AO3 only support PIO mode, not DMA ( that's one of the improvements over the A03 ). I suggest doing a clean install of 5.5.8.0 as upgrade did not work for me . The DVD Video seems to check for preauthored vob files, I tried importing a 3.5 gb mpeg2 file into it but it said it need to be 2 gb max. So I still bunr my DVDs as UDF / ISO dvd.

UPDATE: Doing a CLEAN INSTALL of NERO 5.5.8.0 allowed it to find all recorders just fine. Setting the SECONDARY IDE bus to DMA fixed the stuttering on DVD playback. Test burns from the DVD-R worked just fine. But then, I have a Pioneer DV-343, which would probably play an old tire, if you put it in the machine.

    Thanks for the help, guys.
