  1. hi chums

I have some older dvds which contain videos, some might have been flv files which I converted.

others were from a satellite receiver recorded to dvd via my sony dvd recorder.

I want to transfer vidios from dvd to an external hdd as I have so many dvds know.

on looking at the properties of some of my dvds (4.7g) capacity I have files of 12 gig and some of 8gig.

I am wondering how I have files that total more than capacity of my dvd. the only thing I can think of is that dvdfs were recorded in ep or long play? originally.

dvd s show video ts and video rm in dvd structure.

I think I have posted in correct section.

your views on how I might have such large files on dvd,

    thank you

Possibly symbolic links, in the same way that Blu-ray 3D discs have virtual sizes above 50GB because the 2D files are referenced twice.

Disks recorded in Video Recording mode. Files in the RM folder are, as stated above, just a reference to the actual files in the ts folder.

But, Houston, you have a problem. You will have issues in playing those disks if you merely transfer the folders to an external drive. In fact those disks can ONLY be played in the recorder they were recorded in. To get them to play on an external drive you will have to extract the video data - you can not conventionally rip these.

Those recording modes use a lower bit rates so as to fit more recording time onto a dvd, so that wont account for the bloated files that exceed the discs capacity.

I have heard of copy protections that give bloated GB storage (>4.7GB) on 4.7 capacity DVDs.

  5. thanks all

looking at properties of rm files theyu are empty.

dvds play on my dvd recorder, so I transferred files from dvd to hdd, and cut some old dvds in half.

as db83 has pointed out I cannot simply play them, power dvd recognizes them and plays the files on dvd.

wondershare video convter does not seem to recognize the ts files in the folders I copied them too.

was not aware files might not play or be recognized, will have to be a bit carefull which dvds I discard

    thank you

And if you change your dvd recorder or player then none of these dvds will play unless you can get an exact same model as the one you have at present.

Search the forum for software that can extract the mpeg2 data from the vobs. Been a long time since I had to do this as I also made this classic error with my first dvd-recorder. IIRC Nero can do it and VideoRedo. Maybe Mpegstreamclip as well. There are probably others as well.
