I have some extra vcrs/blu and dvd players. Right now due to limited storage space I have some of them "standing on their side" so they can fit onto a cabinet shelf. Obviously no tapes or discs are inside the machines. My question is after a long time of being in this position, should there be anything I may need to worry about down the road in terms of playback getting screwed up or other possible harmful effects?
Again this is only for storage, if I am using it for playback obviously I will put it flat on the ground like it is supposed to be. The paranoid side of me though wonders if storing on the sides would put or cause pressure to some parts that might wreck things later on? Below is a pic so you can see what I mean.

I'm no engineer so I don't know any of the truly technical aspects of it but as far as I know the only settop unit that was designed to be used vertically was the ps2 then ps3. So I would assume it would be ok to store those units vertically with no ill effect.
I would be dubious about vcrs being stored vertically. Since there are more moving parts in a vcr than a dvd player something might get out of alignment or the heads might get warped or something. Again I'm no engineer just a feeling on that one.
I don't see why it wouldn't be ok to leave a dvd player sideways. Less internal guts than a vcr I believe. I mean since a ps2 can be played vertically it would stand to reason dvd players should be ok vertically storage wise. Unless the ps2 has a special internal chasis designed to hold internal components more rigidly then other units.
So this is a guess on my part:
Vcrs - don't go vertical
dvd players - probably ok
Again that is just my "average joe" opinion. Take from it what you will.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Storing your drives in about any position shouldn't cause only problems. Playback could be different.
Most any DVD/CD/BD player/burner should be able to operate vertical. Some in the past had clips to keep the discs from falling out before the tray closed. That might be a problem with some newer ones. VHS players, maybe, though I don't recall any vertical oriented ones. -
hmmm.. ok so I might then just take the two vcrs and put them on the top of the unit (something I wanted to avoid since the shelf looks nice with nothing on top of it, but better safe than sorry)
