mp4 to avi wondershare or 3gp

Hi guys, quite new to this and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Have a phillips dvd/divx player normally burn avi files and it works fine.
Now I have a mp4 file that I need to convert. Have tried 3gp converter and when I try to oplay on dvd it says something about hd.
Have just now tried wondershare video converter and I really thought it would work. But it didn't. And I realise there are a million settings and I have no idea where to start. Can anyone please give me a heads up? I will be forever greatful.

Try for example freemake video converter(ADWARE!), select to avi, choose the avi xvid+mp3 preset, convert.

Or use xmedia recode, winff, divx converter. Avoid wondershare or 3gp converters.

If it says something about hd, then your avi is probably bigger than 720*576/480. Most DVD/AVI players only display SD resolutions.
