  1. I've made about 7 vcds altogether, and on all of them, I get a pretty good picture, and not so good sound. I have to turn the speakers up quite loud to hear it, but when I do this, I get a sort of buzzing in the background. you can hear it more clearly when no one is speaking, but it can be a bit distracting. I have recorded 10 seconds of it in mp3, (only 70kb) if anyone has the time to listen.

(right click as save as, otherwise it sounds even more distorted)

Here's the settings that I use:

    Audio Format - 44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo 172 kb/sec
    Video Format - 256 x 192 YUY2
    Video Source - Tuner
Compression - PICVideo MJPEG Codec Quality 19
    Frame Rate - 20 / sec

I know it isn't the audio cable, because when I record straight from TV, the sound is good, its only when I record from VHS. Is there any kind of filter I can use to get rid of it, or make it quiter?

    any help appriciated.
    thanks

Maybe run the audio file through an audio editing program like CoolEdit and use its noise filter?

  3. But would this reduce the interferance noise? or all noise? I've noticed that the interferance noise is happening all the time, If I turn the speakers up, the same noise is here, so I swapped the tv card with the sound card in the pci slots, and then all of the interferance noise stopped, but all noise came out as crackles, and nothing was understandable. anyone know how to fix this?

  6. Perhaps a ground loop isolator? (Radio Shack ~$15):

    Ground Loop Isolator

I use one of these between one of our PCs and a Sony sub+speakers that runs on AC power. It hummed like mad through the speakers until I ran out in madness and got one of these. This may or may not solve your problem, but if everything that comes out of your VCR 'hums', it might be worth a try. If only some (but not all) tapes have hum in the audio, then this won't fix your hum woes.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  7. I have this problem too - I use Acoustica (a program similar to Cool Edit) to reduce the noise. The trick is to get a sample of the noise without all the actual audio you want to keep on it (dialogue, background music, whatever). Acoustica can then selectively remove the noise without significantly altering the valid sounds.
