  1. I've been using Cyberlink PowerDirector 7. I like the program very much, although too often it falsely detects Macrovision and won't let me record my own home movies which are not copyprotected. Is there anything I can do? Do I have to put up some money for some new hardware. Perhaps this problem has been fixed in higher versions of PowerDirector? How expensive is a TBC that would fix this?

Can you recommend a TBC that would remove Macrovision? I see them priced all over the place on eBay, $50 here, $500 there.

These are the two most frequently recommended and popular full-frame tbc's, from an established and reputable dealer:
(watch out for eBay. A lot of them are low QC ripoffs -- and the $50 "adapters" are garbage, most of which accomplish nothing and will ruin your video):

There area few others around, but I never tried them and reports about them are variable.

A Panasonic or Toshiba DVD recorder circa 2000-2005 used as tbc-passthru will also ignore macrovision in pass-thru mode, but not in Record mode. They would probably be abetter choice for analog tape and offer other benefits, including line-level tbc function.

I can't give you a guarantee that this will for sure work, but it would save you some money if it does.

As bast I can tell, the Hauppauge Colossus card (internal PCIe slot needed) ignores Macrovision and it comes with a TBC you can turn on with a registry hack. I've used the TBC for some of my VHS tapes and it met my needs very well. I've recorded 7 different commercial VHS tapes which should have Macrovision on them, but I cannot say for sure. They all recorded without any issues.

Cyberlink is rather infamous for being Hollywood's bitch and making consumer unfriendly products as a result of trying to please their Satanic masters in Hollywood. One of our members gets wood every time he talks about Power Director, but I have a really poor opinion of Cyberlink and I don't recommend anything they make.
