    Hi guys,

I'm looking for a program to convert my HD mkvs to lower resolution so I can play in my iPhone 4. It lags when I try playing the 720p mkv files.

I have a i5-3570k and I'm looking to utilize the Quick-Sync feature to reduce the time it takes to convert the video.

If there is a program out there that utilizes this feature or is even faster at converting please let me know. Quality is not an important factor but if there is a program that is free, that's even better.

the hand brake folks have a beta that supports QS, and the quality is quite good; media coder likewise supports QS, both legally free.

I just tried Media coder but when I went through the wizard and tried starting the process, I kept getting errors with the video format and container. I tried some other containers and formats but still got different errors. I'm not really experience with this stuff but it didn't seem really user friendly to me.

Using Handbrake right now and estimated time is 1h30m for a 1h50m video file at 3.31GB. It's about 40 mins faster than what I'm using now.

With handbrake you should be getting much faster encoding times, with a 720p to 480p my system does a 2 hour movie encode in 20 minutes,if you are selecting a high profile it will really slow down your encode.

    That's without QS.

Something is wrong. On my i5 2500K it take about 20 minutes to encode a 2 hour 1920x1080p24 video (both the source and the output). Are you sure you picked the "h.264 (Intel QSV)" encoder? The default is to use x264.

The cropping feature doesn't work properly in the QS beta of Handbrake. Set cropping to Custom, 0, 0, 0, 0.

QS encoding isn't as good as x264 (at similar bitrates/sizes). But it's probably acceptable for viewing on a phone.

Its most likely the quality setting that the op is using and not using QS.

  8. H.264 (Intel QSV) is still available with the iPhone preset.

With that setting a 2 hour movie would take 6 minutes as a guess.

just a shot in the dark, but you are using the gpu integrated onto the 3570k, if you're using a discrete gpu then the intel encoder will run in software mode and then yes it's really slow.

with regards to media coder, i avoid the wizard, i use it the old fashioned way, by manually configuring everything.
