I have been installing Comodo Firewall for years and never had a problem. I am trying to install it on an old Windows XP machine, and am having a hair-tearing time. I used to download it clean as a standalone file. Then they started adding "Geek Buddy" online help and their Antivirus program, neither of which is worth dirt in a mudpit, so I would uninstall them leaving the firewall, which is excellent. Ok, now I can't get the firewall. I downloaded their latest free package, and guess what? No firewall, just the garbage. I tried 1 redownload with no success, so now I have the added complication of the software refusing to install because "there is a previous version installed", even after I uninstalled it through Add/Remove Programs. Revo uninstaller didn't find anything, and I scanned the register and removed all entries there. It still gives me that message. There must be somewhere it is looking and finds an entry and that derails the installation. So:
    >where can I get a legit copy of the Comodo Firewall? An older version would be fine, maybe better. If anyone has one available, I will be happy to download it.
    >where is this thing finding "another copy" of Comodo installed?
I've never had this problem with Comodo before.

Also, if your old XP is Home Edition, not Pro, you might as well choose the olde and goode Kerio

Thanks EH, found an old Zone Alarm that will be fine... and no nags. Good link, I saved it.

  4. Your best place for any program with no added download managers or other crap and they always have the latest release:

Seriously, such bloatwares might be a non-problem for a Windows-7 capable machine, but very-probably will be a big PITA for a conventional XP setup. For machines running Vista or Seven, I still recommend the "outdated" versions of PC Tools firewall ---

--- reasonably fast and not bloated at all

    @ El Heggunte

Thanks for the listing of old apps.
I had been a years long user of Comodo and over the years as it kept updating itself it finally got to the point that it became so bloated I just uninstalled it and decided to do without a firewall svc.

So, yesterday I went to the site you listed and downloaded ver 2.4.18 . It's years old and it works just perfect.

    Again, thanks
    Tony

Hey all, I ran across this firewall, "Online Armor free", and it reminds me of Zone Alarm years ago before they started nag screens and "upgrades" except it's better.
Downloaded ok and installed easy, no garbageware to opt-out. Only 28 meg download. I am pretty impressed with the GUI, they obviously spent a lot of time creating a logical and easy to use interface. For a freebie you have a surprising amount of config features. I included a couple of snags. There is even a listing of running processes and a simple 1-click to block incoming/outgoing running processes. Also an autoloader tab, a very nice touch! It listed the Avira nag screen process ipmgui, and I blocked it with one click. That ended the Avira nag screens. Slows the computer only slightly, very acceptable. So far I'm impressed, but it hasn't been "real-time" tested yet.

I may check it out. I'm currently running Comodo Internet Security Premium v. 5.12.something. Although I've been fairly happy with it, especially the firewall, for a few years, I'm starting to get mildly annoyed at the seemingly more frequent pop-up "upgrade" nags as well as the constant offers for their paid GeekBuddy upsell every time the AV runs and catches even the most innocuous false positives.

I'd like to think that for the most part, I'm my own best geekbuddy; otherwise, I'm sure I can find some even better ones right here at VH than the scriptreaders Comodo most likely employs.

I agree with you; ordinarily, I always uninstalled the Geek Buddy, Dragon (browser) and their useless AV program modules in Remove Programs and removed all entries for them in the registry and wasn't troubled any longer by them or the nag screens. Since I changed to Armor I don't know if you can do that any more. Might be worth while to check it out.

Ordinarily I used to remove Geek Buddy, Antivirus and Dragon browser modules in Cntrl Panel/Remove Programs. I don't know if that can be done with the latest version. Might be worth while to check it out
[EDIT]: .....sorry for double post, too early Sunday AM and its before coffee.

Thanks for mentioning Online Armor. I am currently using Windows Firewall Control free version but I can't modify settings for system files.

  13. L@@K at the Online Armor pics posted by ranchhand, where majority is allowed except only one. Does it make sense?

How many ports and communication protocols you know? and
How many of these your firewall can not successfully block?
How do you know what kind of data is stored in browser sqlite files?
How do you know what is uploaded or sent during various programs updates?

Somewhere you need to compromise, Somewhere you need to ignore.
Someone somewhere I told someone - No Anti-Virus, No FireWall, All 'R' Welcome when gate is open.

  14. If you're unsure of your network security go to Gibson Research and run Shields Up. Also, look at the other options under the services tab.
