  1. I would just like to know is it better to join 2 avi files in vdub first and then encode in tmpge to an mpg, or encode both avi's in tmpge to mpg files and then mux them together? What do most of you do?

Join first and then encode, do as much as you can before encoding to mpeg.

  3. I guess it depends on what you want to do with it ultimately, and which method is quicker (in terms of processing time and number of steps). But otherwise I can't see how it matters. If you're planning on creating a VCD, you have to think about how much will fit on each disk (the TMPGEnc Wizard is good for this). Whichever method you do, you probably just want to avoid cutting them up later on. Neither VirtualDub or TMPGEnc are very good at cutting exactly where you want them to.

I'd probably prefer to join in TMPGEnc because it's easy and relatively fast. In my experience VirtualDub can be very slow - I think because it has to bring the whole thing into memory. TMPGEnc also has a nice feature to encode in batch.

    Hi,

Before I got Vdub and frameserving working with my AVIs from a Hollywood DV Bridge, I encoded shorter clips with TMPGE and burned multiple MPEGs with Nero. Later I merged them together with TMPGE (SVCD @ 2000 bitrate -- fits a 1hour TV show onto 1 CD)

On my DVD player (Pioneer DV-343), I got hesitation between MPEGS which is why I tried merging them before burning. The merged MPEGs "chirped" the sound between segments. Since using VDub and frameserving the whole thing no hesitation and no chirps. I'm now going-on to menus and chapters and don't know what will happen next.
