Does anyone know how I can hack the programming on my sony blu ray BDP S185 to remove the "built in" youtube feature? My son finds inappropriate videos on there. I would like to be able to let him watch netflix in his own room without him finding inappropriate youtube content.
    Thanks

Thanks for trying to help, but that was not what I'm asking. Netflix requires internet access, unless there's a hack for that x-D

Theres got to be a rating system on it. Isn't there some kind of filtering for it? I'd look more into that arena.

Youtube has a "safety mode", which is a joke...

Well then I just guess you have to lay down the law and set strict rules on what can be watched.

Or take away the remote when you aren't home.

  7. Block the blu-ray player's access to youtube at your router.

You are not going to find custom firmware blocking things you don't like. If you can't trust your kid don't allow it online, and that means with all devices.

  9. I have a Sony S570 BD player and you can't remove any channels(which I think is stupid), I called Sony support and they confirmed this. Jagabo offered the best solution but I just tried it and it doesn't work, you have to block all of the channels.

    http://community.sony.com/t5/Blu-Ray-General/BDP-S570-Deleting-channels-from-XMB/td-p/8198

The only other thing I can recommend is a cheap player such as a Roku, it doesn't have a YouTube channel.

If you let your son use netflix then he can access way more inappropriate videos on that than YouTube so it's best to just let him watch cartoons on tv.

I appreciate eveyones parenting advice, but my son has down syndrome and "strict rulrs" don't work. I only let him access the internet when there is someone watching what he's watching. So unless you have actual technical advice, please keep your judgements to yourself.

I would write a letter, the old fashioned kind to SONY head office in your country. AFAIK large multinational companies like SONY or Samsung etc don't make bespoke firmware modifications except perhaps on an industrial scale. ie supply several hundred TV's to a well funded school with special requirements. As has been suggested blocking YouTube at the router level and maybe if there are parental controls on the TV itself, altho' these can have unforeseen consequences. Good luck.

Since YouTube does not allow porn, and age restricts even the mildest violence (largely policed by YouTube users, over-zealously too most of the time), I'm guessing it's "bad words" you are most concerned about?

My son likes and finds alot of "girls butts" videos lol. And he's quick if left alone for even a minute. He doesnt have a player in his room at all. I think I will just take the best suggestion of getting a cheap player. At least he has his own Netflix account where it can be filtered for just kids.
    Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Please stay on topic and skip all parenting advice.

Maybe somekind of firewall that blocks some youtube videos.

The Samsung BD C6500 is a blu ray player we had previously that does allow you to remove "channels" from the menu. I will purchase another one of those.

I was a participant in a recent thread where the OP was looking for a router that could be set up to block the children in the family from using facebook when they should be doing homework. It turns out there are Netgear routers with parental controls that allow blocking individual websites, on individual devices, even at specified times rather than all the time. This is what the OP bought: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122326

When it comes time to replace your current router, a router like the Netgear in the link above might be a good option for your family.

I too share your frustration. My 5 year old girls have a sony BD with max parental controls on. I saw they were watching "My Little Pony: Gonna eat your brains!" on youtube. Check it out. You would be amazed what is on youtube and sony parental controls don't work at all. They were searching for a child version of my little ponies. I am surprised nobody on this board has any solutions to block internet and youtube access and allow netflix on a sony BD. I disabled the wireless on the BD so they can watch videos, but no more netflix. I have no cable run to their room and use the BD so they can watch their favorite movies on kids netflix. Anybody have a solution better than throwing out a $300 BD and buying a non sony $200 BD?

Don't let you children have access to the internet at all, just rent or buy movies that you know are good for them to watch.

I would agree not to give them access to the internet as that is what I am trying to block. The question is how can you block internet access and still allow kids netflix? Until I can find a way all access is blocked in my house.

  24. As has already been mentioned, some routers allow you to block sites according to keywords and/or domain names - my Netgear DGN2200 for example.

Another thought, are there any dns servers out there that could be used to block undesirable websites to every device using your router?

If you have a router that is supported by Tomato or DD-WRT, their firmware have an access restriction section that can restrict access to specific sites.

My Samsung 65" Smart TV has a built in camera and microphone for Skype etc. It's the etc that worries me, maybe it should have a modesty shade and the audio equivalent - I would hate to think someone could hack in and see me sleeping and snoring in front of the TV or even etc's

  28. Bit of masking tape should do the trick. Oh, and don't forget to write everything down instead of saying it out loud. If you have to speak, then turn the TV up loud and turn on any nearby taps! Seriously though, how long before GCHQ, at The Ministry of Justice's request (or the CIA's), is checking up on us at home - obviously for our own safety of course! If we're not doing anything illegal . . . ! Or, even more scary, Vernon Kay hosting "People do the funniest things when they're in their own homes and aren't aware they're being spied on!" and the follow-up program "Apparently I'm a political prisoner, GET ME OUT OF HERE!" immediately after on ITV2. That could be hosted by Vernon's androi . . . er . . . wife, the lovely Tess Daly.

  29. I know we are going off topic but I read recently of people hacking into some Samsung TV's with cameras, the cure is to update the firmware but to be sure put electrical tape over the camera.
