It does not look like a fan to me. There is no air outlet.
It looks more like the case speaker. -
i did take this pic while the comp was on and running that is a fan the air outlet or w/e it is is beyond it ya im not all that good with the workings of a inside of a computer i just need to know the correct sized case fan to get i'v alrdy got a 120 which is bigger then the tower and an 80 one is too small tho it fits the CPU fan but that fan isnt going out like the case fan is
-
Why don't you just measure it with a ruler or a tape measure? If 120mm is too big and 80mm is too small the there's a good chance that it's a 92mm fan.
DB83: If you think the pic above looks more like a speaker than a fan then you either NEED to get your eyes checked or calibrate your screen - maybe even just try turning it on! -
well i did measure it from side to side and top to bottom and it came around about 3.5 inchs each so i hope this 90 one i got or this be the 3rd one i'v gotten that didnt work lol

@TimA-C
You are correct. Next time I will turn my screen on before I answer any topic.
I may have screwed up in thinking this looked like a speaker but it sure don't look like any fan I have ever seen.Last edited by DB83; 20th Jun 2013 at 07:14. Reason: added -C after A

ya its a comp fan for the case itself since ik the cpu fan is a 80mm size its prob an odd looking fan i just needed to know the size im hoping the 90mm i just orderd will work or ill be out of luck a 3rd time xD
-
The standard size of case fan between 80mm and 120mm is 92mm.
DB83: I think it's just 'cos the pic was taken while the fan was spinning - you might not be ready to be shipped off to the old folks home just yet! -
I'm just going out to collect my zimmer.
I just wonder if the CIA has hi-jacked my PC and displayed a different pic. Since, if indeed I am looking at the right place I just see solid metal with no where for air to come in to the case.
The Op did say the PC was on. But if the fan was spinning then why change it. ?
Forget the zimmer. The man in the white coat has just knockd on the door.
PS. Baldrick has some neat, relevant advertising and the banner at the top of my page shows what I always thought were fans.
Since it may be difficult to post with the straight-jacket on, I'll just sing the company song "Why did I reply to this topic" -

With apologies to Baldrick, my profile is now updated to show the first pic from the sanitorium.

It sure looks like a fan to me!!!
LOL!!!

So the 80mm is what ?
Bigger ?
Smaller ?
You really did not say.....
Running, not running, really does not matter......
GIVE SPECIFIC DETAILS OR MEASURE IT!!!!!!!
This is NOT brain surgery or rocket science!!!!!
It's a fan!!!!!

Measure the spacing of the mounting holes. You need a fan that also has the same CFM rating or better. That is, if you want to replace the one in the picture. What's wrong with it? Making noise? Not cooling well enough? Difficult to believe that HP used a cheap StarTech fan -- well, not so hard to believe, at that.
-
I 'shopped the startech in there.

when i measured it from side to side and top to bottom the measurements came to about 3.5 for each oh it makes noises the really annyiong kind drives me nuts and its not really keeping the comp cool plus the rpms drop below 500 at a time but yes a 120mm fan was way too big it didn't even fit inside of the case itself and the 80mm didnt even come close to matching up with the screw holes let alone the outsides of the current fan the lowest drop in rpms this current fan has gone too is 447
-
Measuring the mounting holes doesn't necessariuly give you the exact diameter of the fan. You just look for a fan that has the same mounting holes.
Don't know where you're shopping for your fans. Most PC's would use an air exchange rating of something like 65 CFM (cubic feet per minute). Few of those fans would be absolutely silent, but there are plenty of good fans in that CFM range that don't sound like a jet airplane. A fan that cools will move a lot of air -- the sound of moving air is what you should hear, not a screaming motor.Last edited by sanlyn; 21st Jun 2013 at 09:17.

that is how this fan came when she got the computer idk why its backwards or forwards idk oh i was hearing a screaming cracnking noise ever so now that woudlnt shut the hell up for atlest 2 hours or more and im shopping from newegg two of my friends both suggested this site and all so is the wires supose to be in the front or back in both of the fans i got now the wires is hidden from view and are on the back side idk im not a comp expert on the inside of the tower i only konw hwo to work the comp side lol
-
If a 120 mm fan is too big, and an 80 mm fan is too small, then chances are the old fan is a 92 mm fan. ...but for the most part, the tolerances for fans mounts are not so tight that a 90 mm fan won't work.
-
Usually the label that displays the brand and model of the fan is on the back of the fan, which should be facing toward the air outlet where it's mounted. In other words, the air almost always flows out of the side with the label. You can feel the flow of air when it's turned on. The wires are found in different locations on different fans. You probably know that you should not hold the fan by the front or back while it's running.
Newegg is a good source and lists all the details on every fan they sell. Browse through the user reviews to get an idea of what the buyers think of them. Be careful of air flow ratings higher than 80 CFM; those fans tend to be quite loud, but I sometimes think that users believe fans should be completely silent. A fan that does a good job of moving air will never be "silent"; they are supposed to cool your computer, not put you to sleep.
As usually-quiet says, there is very little difference between the size of 90mm or 92mm mounts.Last edited by sanlyn; 21st Jun 2013 at 13:55.

fans in front/top/side usually draw air in and the fans in the back or bottom blow out. creates airflow.

True, but if this PC is a retail unit with only one fan mount, it should blow air out. I doubt that it has more than one fan mount, most retail units don't.
-
it would be a really bad place for an exhaust fan. hot air rises that's why most fans are at the top back.
