Can't get this VHS/DVD player out of rapid play mode

I got a Magnavox VHS DVD player recorder model #ZV427MG9 (refurbished). I have a ton of VHS tapes to burn to discs. Worked like a champ right out of the box playing a VHS tape. About 10 minutes of playing, rewinding etc., the player stays in rapid play and I can't get it out of this mode. I tried pressing the rapid play button on the remote (has new batteries) multiple times but it stays the same. I tried unplugging the unit, plug it back in, inserting a different tape and the same problem, I hit the play button and she goes right into rapid play. Unit defective?

definitly, take it back. More than likely the control encoding wheel is not operating as it should, that's inside the VCR.

It makes me wonder what (refurbished) actually means. Yeah, it looks brand new but definitely a returnable. Thanks.
