My source is a DV PAL .avi file, with a resolution of 720x576 (at 25fps).

Would it make more sense to convert to a VCD with a resolution of 360x288 (half both ways) rather than the standard of 352x288, or won't it make any difference at all?

(P.S. I have tried with a sample, and couldn't REALLY notice anything, but I'm not expecting to see major differences, but every little bit helps.)

  2. You should not use 360x288.

VCDs only support resolutions of 352x240 for NTSC and 352x288 for PAL.

The "pixel resolution" of VCD (or DVD for that matter) has absolutely nothing to do with the display aspect ratio of the video.

VCDs and SVCDs are always displayed on a TV with a display aspect ratio of 4:3 (i.e., it is expanded to fill the TV display).

DVDs are always displayed on a TV with a display aspect ratio of either 4:3 or 16:9.

    Regards.

oh... OK. It seems I don't fully understand that then...

It just seems weird that my .avi is captured at 720x576 (which IS 4:3, is it not?) whereas the VCD template/standard is 352x288.

(And like I said, 360x288 does burn (without compliance) and does play in my player).

360x288 may play on your player, but it isn't standard and your neighbors player may refuse to play it. There is no reason to encode to 360x288 instead of 352x288. As vitualis said, VCD and SVCD are always displayed with a Displayed Aspect Ratio of 4:3, no matter which resolution you chose, but the VCD PAL standard requires 352x288.
