I plan to use Avidemux 2.6.4 to convert some 1080p.mp4 (1920x1080) files to xvid.avi files to play on universal DVD players (like my Philips 5992).

The Philips tells me "Video Resolution not Supported" because I forgot to resize it. I read that the Philips supports up to:

    "SD NTSC: 720x480 29.97 fps
    SD PAL: 720x576 25 fps
    "

GSpot tells me the 1080p.mp4 files are 23.976fps which makes me even more uncertain…

I'm lost as to what best to enter into in the swsResize filter's settings.

    Name: swsResize.jpg
Views: 1899
Size: 85.2 KB

Shall I leave "Lock Aspect Ratio" checked, and correct Source (and Destination) to 16:9? (Both say "4:3" when the window opens.) Shall I set Resize Width/Height to 720x404?

Please help, thank you very much!

p.s. I think I do know how to handle the video and audio settings otherwise.

  2. i don't use avidemux.
as i knew, all HD and your HD source should be PAR 1:1, should not have a much problem in down-scaling HD to SD. post mediainfo or GSpot details for your source, preferably small sample. Keep it in mind to turn-off GMC and QPEL, and probably packed-bitstream.

Also try the built-in profile. On my version 2.5 you open your source, then go Auto > Optical Disc > DVD, you get asked input and output aspect ratios (I guess 16:9 and 16:9 in this case), and everything gets set up for you.

    Cheers,
    Francois

i'd leave your resize as listed in the first post. it should work fine. 23.976fps is ntsc just like 29.97 so it is the same size.

    Thank you very much, aedipuss!

I'm quite surprised that my initial (and very uncertain) guess was a good one.

Thank you very much for your reply, emin!

I see Qpel8 options under "Macroblock decision" (which of these would you suggest I choose, please?):

    • None
    • DCT
    • Qpel16
    • Qpel8
    • Square
(Thanks again, since during my last very different project I thought I recalled Qpel was appropriate.)

  8. which encoder are you using?

    1080p.mp4 (1920x1080) files to xvid.avi
hope you are using DiVX/XViD, not x264.
DiVX/XViD standard options available to end user do not allow to select MacroBlock size.

    For your info:
H.263 Advanced Prediction Mode/Overlapped Block Motion Compensation normally uses 4 8x8, which in fact gives better details than 1 16x16 too.

Does Avidemux also offer 2 way motion vectors in PB mode for XViD?
    This is an enhancement too!

i have never come across this in my whole life! (Avidemux might be offering much more options than standards.)
there are many things yet to be known to me!
may be something dunno wanna know either.

I'm using XVID in Avidemux (where the xvid setting confuse me more than in VirtualDub). I'd really love any input on these two tabs, please:

  10. settings seems OK according to pics you posted here.

    some suggestions:
Use H263 Quantization Type with Quantizer 4. Use MPEG Quantization for Quantizer lower than 4 . OK in your case.

If you have BD player, Do Not downscale to SD, go for XViD-1080HD profile.
Adv. Simple Level 4 is capable of 1920x1088. (H263+v2)
If you go for XViD-1080HD, set Quantizer to 2.

Convert AAC audio either to mp3 or AC3.
    Hope, no more doubts.

  11. Why not just make DVDs since you'll be playing them in a DVD player anyway? Just open your 1080p MP4s in AVS2DVD and let it go to work on them.

  12. who knows may be coyote2 like quick dishes to eat, prefers avi over dvd.
or at-least he can have XViD-1080p HD.
    waiting for his feed back.

Not if playing them in his DVD player he can't. And he'll get better quality by making a DVD. Now, if final size is a consideration, then maybe, but DVDRs are cheap.

Thank you both, enim and manono, for your replies! Since you so kindly point out the relevance of my goals, I'll elaborate on why I'm aiming for xvid.avi:

I can already play the 1080p.mp4 files on my own networked media player (TViX). But I'd like the larger population of people with universal disc players (i.e. ones that can play SD avi files, like most of my friends) to be able to view this content.

Manono, great point about making (TS_VIDEO type) DVD, I'm not exactly sure why I don't care to make them viewable by the even greater community of people with regular DVD players. I guess I'm thinking that the people that are gonna receive this content are gonna have universal players; after all, .avi files are a far more common format (than the DVD video format) for downloading content via bittorrent/usenet.

And while I'm more interested in quality than small size when encoding the xvid, DVD video seems a b/w waste when it comes to creating downloadable content (I guess that's why xvid avi files are the standard for downloading SD content rather than DVD video). And given this, I know zero now about DVD formatting (like chapters and TOC).

    Now to your specific advice:

Cool, it sounds like the advice I got here last year to pair MPEG Quantization with Quantization 3 is being reinforced here.

And again cool, I'm planning to convert the AAC to mp3 (at the same kbps).

As of now, I think that all my questions have been answered! Once again, I think this is the best help forum in the world!
