MKV to MKS (subtitles) conversion?

I have a subtitled MKV video. It plays fine on my computer, but I want to play it my iPad. The iPad doesn't natively play MKV video.

MKVtoonix is a good Mac app to deal with processing, but my results were poor. I used Jubler to render the subs, but the ASS subs i ended up with didn't work well; the text was gobbledygook.

In other words, my next step is to convert my MKV/ASS subs to SRT before I progress anywhere, but my Mac tools don't seem to be able to do this.

Any ideas?

Most of the time it's a bad idea to convert ass to srt since you will loose nearly all formatting information (only one font, nol animations&co), especially if you aim to create a mp4/m4v in the end the subtitle have to become ttxt subtitle and nearly no fonts are supported by most devices for ttxt.

-> the best solution would be to look for a player which supports mkv with ass subtitle on the iPad (got no iPad, so no clue if one exists)

That aside, Hybrid (runs n Mac/Linux/Windows) should be able to remux mkv -> mp4 and adjust the subtitles.

1. start Hybrid
2. load source
3. enable Config->Automation->Passthrough->Video->Subtitle
4. set "Main->Primary Input Selection->Video handling" to "passthrough"
5. set "Main->Primary Input Selection->Audio handling" to "passthrough all"
6. set the output
7. enable Config->Internals->Output->Container Settings->Mp4 Settings->iTunes compatibility
8. press "Main->Add to Queue" (right corner)
9. press "Main->Start Queue" (right corner)

Alternatively most people prefer to reencode the video stream and embed the subtitles into the video stream.
pro: subtitles with all effects&co stay there
con: reencoding takes a lot of time and lowers the quality

I'd never heard of Hybrid before (despite intensive searching) - and it looks very promising. Thanks for the concise and accurate instructions, too; while the application isn't intuitive, your instructions were very clear and accurate.

Hybrid works very well, but it seems that, somewhere in the encoding process, the subtitles can be lost. (In other words, it may be necessary to add the subtitles in an later step.)

But here's the issue: .mkv documents are composed of video, audio, and subtitle files. There's no problem if there's only video and audio; however, subtitle files are frequently .ass documents. This is the step when the subtitles disappear after processing. That may be what's happening here.

1. start Hybrid
2. enable Config->Automation->Passthrough->Video->Subtitle
3. set "Main->Primary Input Selection->Video handling" to "passthrough"
4. set "Main->Primary Input Selection->Audio handling" to "passthrough all"

6. set the output
7. enable Config->Internals->Output->Container Settings->Mp4 Settings->iTunes compatibility
8. press "Main->Add to Queue" (right corner)
9. press "Main->Start Queue" (right corner)

"Config->Automation->Passthrough->Video->Subtitle" needs to be enabled before loading the source.

If this also doesn't work try:

1. start Hybrid
2. set "Main->Primary Input Selection->Video handling" to "passthrough"
3. set "Main->Primary Input Selection->Audio handling" to "passthrough all"
4. load source
5. enable Main->Primary Input Selection->All subtitles
6. press 'Add&Extract Subtitles' (the '+', next to the 'all subtitles'-checkbox)
7. set the output
8. enable Config->Internals->Output->Container Settings->Mp4 Settings->iTunes compatibility
9. press "Main->Add to Queue" (right corner)
10. press "Main->Start Queue" (right corner)

If that also doesn't work I really broke something in one of the last updates.

For some reason, the subtitles aren't being generated, even with the new version of Hybrid. I came up with error(s) that may have stopped further processing:

On the second input procedure, at:

You need to close and open Hybrid before you try the second way. If subtitles were detected and the 'Automation...'-part is not active the All subtitles and '+' should not be grayed out.

About the missing file:
Enable debugOutput (Config->Internals->Create debug file, level 4') reproduce the problem and attach the HybridDebugOutput.txt which should be in the output folder.

In the meantime, I've been investigating other ways of addressing this challenge. I found this link:

This addresses the problem exactly. The application is MP4Tools, a cheapware program that can solve the import of mkv files into the iPad. After playing around with the application, I found out that it worked, albeit not terribly quickly - but it's probably a realistic speed, since going from mkv to mp4 is a little more involved than simply a file conversion. Count on at least thirty minutes for a half-hour file

So far, it's the only application that can - at least yet - reliably convert mkv to mp4 on the Mac.

The debug issue seems to have broken at least one machine!

I've started using MP4Tools. Not exactly slick, but it's handled just about everything I've thrown at it. Surprisingly, MP4Tools seems to be the only software out there for the Mac that converts .mkv to .mp4 while handling those pesky .ass files.

If you only have .srt files to contend with, you'll do just fine with something like Handbrake.

Sorry, to hear that, but I have no idea how Hybrid could do that, btw. I'll release a new fixed version later today.
