I've done a google on the subject
And the general consensus seems to be: stay away from Handbrake - it's toooo slow
On one link, someone recommends freemaker (I think that's what it's called) - because it's much much faster
Anything else worth considering?
To clarify: I will be taking a h264 video MKV file, typically 720p and resizing down so I can play on my Android
Thanks

Kirara Encoder....but it seems that the developer has abandoned it.
Try also change x264 preset handbrake, like ultrafast. -

If you want good quality and small file size, then wait a lot. H264 encode operation is not simple.

wait til there's an h265 encoder the public can use. oye vey. if you want faster encoding buy a high end i7 desktop computer.

Almost all the freeware video encoders use x264. Most of what determines how fast those programs run is the speed of the encoder. The difference in encoding speed between the slowest and fastest presets in x264 is about 100 fold. So most of the differences in encoding speed between those programs are the settings they use in x264. Indeed, the "placebo" preset will give you a little better quality than "veryfast" (many people won't even notice the quality difference at normal playback speed) but it will take you 50 times longer to encode.
As I recall, Handbrake's Normal preset is about the same as x264 veryfast preset. It's High Profile preset is about the same as x264's medium preset. And Handbrake lets you change many of the settings to suit your needs.Last edited by jagabo; 25th May 2013 at 20:58.

LMFAO
One thing you need to know about forums is that many are populated by know nothings who've been flamed off good forums that have people who actually do know something.
As mentioned, if you want faster encoding, get a faster computer. Or use the fastest encoding settings, but then you'll probably be complaining that handbrake quality sucks. Which it doesn't. -

I'm assuming of course you have an android tablet or phone that supports sd memory cards. If so just get the largest that your unit will support - most newer ones should support up to 32gb and then you really wouldn't have to reencode anything.
2 - look into streaming the video.
If this is at home simply get tversity or playon or ps3mediaserver and stream your files from your computer to your android tablet/phone.
Then you don't need to do anything as these will transcode the files in realtime to play on your device.
The reason I say if your at home for this is you can use your home wifi network to do it - though you should get a wifi n router to give you the best possible results. Otherwise you'll have to hit your data plan if you are using 3g/4g on the road or at school or work or whatever. If thats the case look into a larger memory card and don't stream.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I've had no problems with Handbrake in my DVD>MKV conversions and I find it converts quite quickly. It takes my PC about 23 minutes on average for that type of conversion from a DVD on one of my optical drives. But I don't convert for my Android phone. Just to my HDD for easy playback on my HTPC. Mostly at a CQ of 19.3 for a ~2GB file.
My H.264 encodes have been fairly fast. But most of that is due to my PC performance. Six cores and running at 3.6GH will speed up those types of encodes quite a bit. A slower, two or less core computer, especially if it's running at less than 3GHZ, will be slower for H.264. -

However cuda does have its detractors on this website so it might not be for everyone. (quality wise that is).
Suffice it to say investing in a stronger processor would be your best bet for speed enhancement.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
If you're stuck with an Athlon XP3200 then a CUDA enabled graphics card (and the right software) may be the way to go. But if you can upgrade to a quad core Intel computer, or hex core AMD computer, you'll get similar speed and better quality encodes with x264 at the veryfast preset.

FYI
@Baldrick
About Kirara Encoder :
it seems the project did migrate with another name : kirara.sourceforge.net/ redirects tw http://shana.pe.kr/
Downoad version here :
http://sourceforge.net/projects/shanaencoder/files/ShanaEncoder1.7.3.exe/download
Looks different though : more efficient GUI, but less Video Filters tweaking.
Still, could be useful to op.
My two cents. -
Or any IvyBridge or SandyBridge with QuickSync...HandBrake now has a QSV encoder.
