  1. Been a while since I've messed around with capture software. Figure there is a better program out there now then there was 10 years ago.

I'm looking for the best way to capture video in an already compressed format (xvid). Is there any kind of freeware out there that will allow me to? Virtual Dub able to do that now? Or am I doomed to record into default mp4 format in windows and then convert after the fact.

Hard for me to search internet properly to do research, currently deployed with army and on terrible connection. I'd like to make some short videos for family back in States as easily as possible. Want to avoid converting to Xvid if I can capture it in a native xvid format.

Any advice on software to use? Also, I'm on windows 8 right now if that matters.

  2. VirtualDub + Xvid is ok. Just be sure to use settings fast enough for realtime compression.

  3. Thanks, I figured it would be good enough. Always loved virtual dub, it can do a lot and doesn't take up much space. Now, have to wait 20 mins for it to DL on my shitty satellite connection haha. Thank you for confirmation of my current idea.

  4. If you're not looking for max compression, Divx is twice as fast as Xvid when both are at their fastest settings.
