  1. Are there any reliable services who do a good job at transferring VHS to PC?

I don't need a DVD. I just want files, want them in good quality, and want my VHS tape returned to me.

I bought a rare old VHS tape one eBay of my friend. I'd like to add a quick intro and convert it for YouTube.

I'd consider buying something, but I've only got ONE tape to do at the moment.

Get Easycap ($5.00/$20.00) + Virtualdub (Freeware) using Lossless codec like UT VIDEO ULY2= Good quality capture.

Edit using Windows Live Movie Maker (Windows Vista, 7 and 8) freeware too.

Remember, various tapes VHS need TBC hardware to get quality image. I dont use this and for me is acceptable quality.

  3. I'd pay if there's a service that does it for me. With that method I'd have to buy a VCR, so while the Easycap is cheap, the VCR is expensive.

Do you like UT VIdeo better than HuffYUV? I used to use Huffy back in the day.

There are services online but you've got shipping both ways to add onto the cost of the conversion itself. Have you checked locally at all? Craigslist?

  5. I actually just found a local place.. 1.5 hours local, but I'll see what they say. If it's roughly the same as online with shipping then I'll do it.

Alternatively: friends who have a VHS/DVD recorder combo? The quality wouldn't be ideal but if the destination is YouTube...

Not knowing where you live does make it difficult to give you suggestions. For example, it would pointless to suggest a US service to someone who lives in the UK or Australia. If you found a local place that's probably best, but our long time member Lordsmurf does this kind of thing. You'll have to ask him about prices, but I'm sure he'd do quality work.
